Why Should I Learn About Marketing?

Three Good Reasons to Learn About Marketing for Small-Business Owners

Jeremy G. Woods
So, you own a small business. That's great, but your company will probably not get much of anywhere unless you, the owner, knows much about marketing. Most companies employ a marketing director, or at least someone whose main position is marketing. However, as a small-business owner, you will have to do most of the marketing yourself. I have come up with three good reasons that you should invest your time in learning about marketing.

1. You probably cannot afford to hire a marketer.

With the economy in the shape that it is in, you may not be able to afford someone to do your marketing, especially someone who can market your company well. Sometimes in owning your own company, you will have to take charge of certain areas of your business for which owners of larger companies may be able to hire other people.

2. You should know something about all sides of operation of your company.

If you want to run your company, you should know all aspects of your company yourself in case you end up hiring someone in the future and then have to cut back on employees. Good business skills must include flexibility. You should be willing to do what it takes to keep your company afloat, and the best way to do so is to learn about all of the operating techniques of a company, including marketing.

3. Marketing is an interesting topic.

Even if you did not have to know marketing because you had someone doing your marketing for you, as a business owner you should find ways to improve your skills in business management, and that would include knowing something about marketing. Marketing has such a wide range of activities, so much that it would be hard to know everything about marketing as a small business owner; however, this should not keep you from exploring about marketing because you should be interested in ways to keep the public interested in your company's services or products.

Now that you know why you should learn about marketing, you should start looking at ways to affordably learn about marketing. I am including several links to websites that provide resources about marketing.
