Why I Love Marco Rubio

Meritocracy Vs. Plutocracy

What truly fascinates me about the affairs of men, and the progression of the course of human events, are those moments, when a single man, armed with a powerful idea, changes the course of the body politic, such that all are prospered, friends, family, enemies and generations yet unborn. We, in the United States of America, because of the blessings of liberty, secured through just such a moment, that day when Patrick Henry cried, "Give me Liberty or Give me Death!" have witnessed many such moments. They would be too numerous to list here. But just two examples, John Kennedy's Lunar Challenge, and Ronald Reagan's Berlin Speech, would be a great place to start in your understanding of profound words calling into existence profound, prosperous change.

Marco Rubio has done this much for Florida. In his tenure as Speaker of the House of Representatives, he initiated the 100 ideas concept: the manner in which legislation was produced in Tallahassee was deeply flawed; law was being generated in response to special interests, and sensational headlines. Marco, being at the center of this storm of incoherence, and the resultant bad product, declared: We should listen to the people, we should not be holding fundraisers, we should have idea-raisers. Good ideas are worth much more than money.

Now we all instinctively know this to be a basic law of ethics and prosperity. Plutocracy, Oligarchies, Monarchies, may have brief moments of benign prosperity for the many, but in the end, they always devolve into despotism. Deeply imbedded in the American Character is the Horatio Alger, rags to riches story of individual prosperity, enriching not just the creative hard worker, but all those that come into contact with the creative hard worker. This is the story of Alexander Bell, Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, and many other icons to numerous to mention. It was the hope of the Founding Fathers, that the political system, through the electoral process, would sift out, reward and elevate great ideas, and great ethical character. This is the essence of American Representative Democracy in the United States.

In the case of Marco Rubio, in his tenure as Florida Speaker of the House, he did not disappoint. I know Marco, he is a friend of mine, but even if I did not know him, I would love him still, not so much for the man, but for the transcendent ideas. Sadly, due to the prosperity of the Boom years, the power of money came to once again dominate in Florida Politics, scheming ethically challenged men of small ideas have dominated the Process for too long, and now just a few short years after that brief shining moment called into existence by Marco, we have fallen into hard times.

This is a titanic, unending struggle, will Plutarchracy reign or will ideas reign? At least in the case of the Senate battle between the money of Charlie Crist, and the ideas of Marco Rubio, the people are making the wiser choice. Will that insight spill over into the other races of lesser notoriety? Let us pray that good men of good character, bearing great ideas, no matter their station, will prevail over those who traffic in cronyism and small ideas.

I know, if Marco remains true to his character, he will do for Washington D.C. what he did for Tallahassee Florida. We all know how this movie ends. Good ideas are worth much more than money. Money should be the evidence of good ideas, and not the weapon of despots. Let us hasten the Day!
