After trying out several of the models in the store, we ended up selecting the Sleep Number 7000 Bed, which, at the time (this was in 2001), was the top-of-the-line model. We chose a King-sized bed and with the deluxe pillow top cover and dual air chambers. Besides the comfort of the pillow top, we were very pleased with the fact that the foundation would come to us in disassembled parts, which was important since getting a King-sized bed up to our bedroom could prove to be difficult.
The cost for the Sleep Number Bed that we chose at the time was just around $3,400, and a price check on the Select Comfort website shows that the price is still nearly the same, increasing by only around $100. The only major change to this product since the time that we bought our bed appears to be the addition of a wireless firmness controller (remote control). Our controllers are wired, but we've never had a problem with them, or lost them, which happens with so many remote controls around the house.
When the bed arrived (it was shipped via UPS) it came in several boxes, and the assembly of the foundation was extremely easy - like putting together a puzzle designed for a 3-year old child. It was very lightweight and was maneuvered into position with ease. The rest of the Sleep Number Bed was also easy to assemble and we had the entire bed put together in under half an hour.
The comfort level of this bed has been remarkable, especially since we can now adjust the air chambers on each side to suit our own needs, but also because sometimes the Sleep Number that you've been using doesn't feel good anymore - like after doing lots of yard work, or something else that makes you feel extra sore. So you simply readjust your own personal number up or down until you feel right. You can actually feel the pressure being removed from spots in your body as the air chamber changes.
The only thing that we have not been satisfied with about our Select Comfort Bed is that the pillow top has degraded over time. There are noticeably flatter portions of the pillow top where the heaviest parts of the body lie. We found out that we could purchase a replacement from Select Comfort and since the bed is still under warranty, it would be at a reduced cost.
Overall, the Sleep Number Bed by Select Comfort is a fabulous bed, due to its comfort, durability and ease of assembly and movement. It is ideal for individuals who are trying to find one bed that can handle different comfort levels for each of them.
