Why I Love Spring Cleaning

Nina Rotz
I am not a Winter kind of person. Cold is unattractive to me and being indoors all day is not something I find enjoying. When Spring comes around it is a completely different story. Being an outdoors fan, I am able to go out for relaxing walks and enjoy the warm weather. I'm also able to enjoy the bounty of beautiful Pennsylvania State Parks. Another perk of Spring is spring cleaning. I look forward to it so much that I get ready weeks in advance and even make a plan of attack.

Spring cleaning can help your home but it can also help you personally. Having a clean home makes you feel welcome when you're walking through the front door. It is not so much about pleasing other individuals, your home is your castle and it should be comforting to you. There is nothing as comforting as a clean home to come to that is refreshed and updated. Spring cleaning also does not take me a long time to finish up. I start with the basics and clean my way room to room.

Also, I crank up the music. Our family happens to own a large collection of CDs with much thanks to my music junkie husband. On the cleaning days when I do not feel like sorting through music CDs, I crank up the Satellite Radio on my laptop. I'm even musically fortunate to have Comcast On Demand, and I can always listen to music that gets me in the cleaning mood. On some Spring cleaning days it's the Oldies but Goodies or the latest releases. Whatever the mood is, I have resources to find a good tune. After all, cleaning in silence is no fun and Spring is a symbol of new beginning and great times.

I find that some of my Spring cleaning enjoyment has been passed down from my mother. I remember ,as a child, when Spring would come around the entire house would be uprooted. My Dad would be instructed to paint all the walls, or sometimes he'd be nagged to the point of doing it. Whatever my Mother's methods were, they seemed to work and get the job done. My sister and I were in charge of cleaning our room top to bottom. Sometimes she'd even talk us into rearranging our room. My sister, being the super-organized one of the two kids, would draw out a floor plan and would draw out furniture pieces. I on the other hand, would attempt to wing it and pray for good results. My mother would be so into Spring cleaning that all of our blankets would be washed, even the ones stored for guests only. She'd take down every curtain in the house and wash them. By the time she was done Spring cleaning there would be no dust bunny to be found or a crumb on the floor. It was so clean in fact that we could have probably eaten off of our floors.

My Spring cleaning affection does not borderline on obsession like my Mother's. I make sure it is done thoroughly, and that all the windows are wide opened to air the house out of the Winter blues.
