Why I Love Wal-Mart

Nico Riley
It seems like everywhere I go I hear something about Wal-Mart. Sitting in one of my social science college lectures the topic often went to Wal-Mart, especially since the Big Box Ordinance was constantly in the news. Many people expressed their extreme distaste for the retail giant. Sometimes I felt like I was alone in shopping there. But even if I was alone in the classroom, I know that I'm one of millions of Wal-Mart shoppers.

I've heard complaints about the employees, the wages, and just dislike of the store in general. Since I've never worked at Wal-Mart, I can't speak on their wages. Of the people I know who have or are currently working there, I don't hear them complaining about wages or hours. Perhaps they just don't want to put their business out there or maybe they don't have any complaints about it. The employees I've encountered have not been rude in any way while I've shopped in the store. Being a frequent Wal-Mart customer, I seldom need any employee assistance but the times I have needed it, they have been extremely helpful.

What's that saying they have on their television commercials? Always low prices, always. I have to agree with them on that. When I want something and I don't want to pay a lot of money for it, Wal-Mart is the place I go. They have everything from furniture, clothes, food, personal items, household items, and even pet supplies. When I was in the process of moving where did I go to buy the bulk of the things I needed? You guessed it, Wal-Mart. I bought a cartload of things I would need for less than $100. I even went back and bought a new computer desk and microwave cart which are both very nice. I priced many items I purchased at Wal-Mart at other stores and just about every time Wal-Mart had the lower price. My flat screen television came right from Wal-Mart with a DVD player and VCR attached. I paid less for it than I would've paid for a smaller television without anything attached.

Another great thing about Wal-Mart is the clothes. While I admit I don't buy most of my clothes there, shorts, t-shirts, and socks are always things I pick up. Shopping for my nephew is great because the kid's clothes are always priced low and sometimes I even find whole outfits for him on clearance. Being an 8 year old boy, he often messes up his clothes playing and finding jeans for less than $10 and shirts for $5 is a really good deal.

One of my favorite sections in Wal-Mart is the electronics section. Bins filled with DVDs often priced at $5 each. I've stumbled upon some great movies that would've cost me a lot more had I bought them elsewhere. CDs, computer virus software, video game equipment-it's all there. During the holidays this is one store I'm sure to stop in.

When I go out shopping, I don't like to have to make a lot of different stops to get the things I need. If I go to Wal-Mart, I can pretty much make one trip and leave satisfied. It won't break my wallet and most times I can cross everything off of my list by the time I leave.

I'm no longer impressed with Walmart. It used to be my store of choice, but I can't afford their groceries. The prices have gone sky-high. I can do much better at Aldi's these days.

    1. There is a Wal Mart practically within 5 miles of anywhere you might be at. 2. Almost all Wal Marts are open 24/7. 3. Wal Mart's prices are competitive. 4. Wal Mart has practically everything. 5. Wal Mart will match any special that any of their competitors are currently running. Those above 5 reasons are why I will never say anything bad about Wal Mart. If any other retail chain is willing & able to do those 5 above-mentioned things as well or better than Wal Mart, let it step up to the plate & possibly bring Wal Mart down. Until then, Wal Mart will be my retailer of choice.

Your article has been around a while, and I'm surprised to see no comments, even though it has a high rating! I think your observations are right on the money (pun intended). I'm very familiar with Wal-Mart professionally, and personally, I shop there, too. Every successful business has its "warts," and Wal-Mart's no exception. Wal-Mart is comprised of PEOPLE, and true, some of them might be ill suited to deal with the public. However, I've found the vast majority of Wal-Mart associates to be capable, friendly, and many have been there for a long time and love it. Also, each store has a different "personality." Perhaps some of the critics make a judgment based on a narrow perspective, and should visit some other locations. Sure is odd how many people "hate" it, but where do they spend their dollars? Wal-Mart! Thanks for your perspective.
