Why Many Homebase Businesses Fall

Tammy Evans
Since no one person has any idea how many homebased businesses there are, it's clear we have no way of knowing how many of these businesses will eventually fail but there is tremendous coming-and-going in this industry everyday. Many newcomers, at first excited by the idea of working at home, soon become disenchanted when they realize a homebased business means time, commitment and hard work. Since such activities were never really businesses in the first place, it's hard to think of them as business failures when they cease. But if I had to guess, I'd day that at least half of all "wannabes" won't last long enough to become a real business.

Yet this is no reason for you not to try!

You may be among the successes, and even if you're not, I can guarantee your entrepreneurial experiment will teach you wonderful things about yourself you would of never learn otherwise.

Some homebased businesses fail not because they are unprofitable or unsuccessful, not simply because of some uncontrollable event in the owner's life that makes cessation of the activity necessary. A marriage, a divorce, a death, a birth, loss of one's home to a fire, hurricane, flood, a sudden illness; all these events and many more can have a great impact on your business plans and the overall business failure rate of homebased entrepreneurs.

The good news is, if you reach the stage where you are really in business and keep putting time and effort into your endeavor, your odds for success may be as high as 95 percent.

One reason today's business beginners have a greater chance for success is because so many others have gone before them, sharing their experience and knowledge in books, magazines, newsletters and success videos.

Today's small business owners also have the advantage of computer technology, which make sit possible for them to operate much like Fortune 500 companies. In addition a wealth of help is available from government sources, community colleges, and other learning centers, plus individual teachers and advisers.

If you don't possess business management and marketing skills and feel you cannot acquire them through self-study, one option is to work with someone who does have a "head for business," such as a family member or friend who can be your business partner. "Do what you do best and hire out the rest" is excellent business advice, but it's expensive to hire outside business services. You may be surprised by how much you can do on your own with a little time and effort. Many communities now have helpful directories of homebased professionals or organized networking groups where such contacts can be made. You can also connect with such professionals by joining a home-business organization or reading entrepreneurial magazines.

Good advice is always helpful, but don't let other people tell you how to run your business. There is much to be said for following the dictates of your heart, trusting your intuition and gut instincts, and marching to a different drummer. You will never become a leader in your field by imitating the actions of your competitors but if you do make a mistake by taking someone else's advice, learn from it and move on!

As you develop your own business ideas, you should read, study and carefully weigh the advice and experience of others while also remembering your way just might be as good as or better than anyone else's.

Many people who think they do not possess the necessary talent and skill to start and operate a successful business are often surprised to discover their true abilities and potential for success once they get going. Thus, what you may be doing best a year or two from now, when compared to the things you now do best, will no doubt amaze you. Once you have started your business, I wager you'll soon be saying, "I can't believer I'm actually doing this. I had no idea I was capable of such things,"
