CAD is an acronym for Computer Aided Design. This is a combines both hardware and software for use by a variety of designers to produce, illustrate or manufacture a host of products and services that rely on graphic representation of real world products.
CAD is used extensively in engineering, architecture, real estate, haute couture and a host of other professions for providing initial product xxx by taking specifications and preparing the design on a computer. The extent of the utilization of CAD is so widespread, that trying to list all professions would require an article in its own right.
In the past, the design of a product required exhaustive drawing on drafting paper where a mistake would result in the loss of several hours of work. A small change in the drawing would require that a completely new drawing be made. At end of the day, the designer would spend more time on the drawings themselves rather than in the designs.
CAD finds uses in many industries for many types of models. Two-dimensional (2-D) models like curves or surfaces, Three-dimensional (3-D) models like solids and animation. Designs include containers for cosmetic products, components for machinery, fully assembled constructs like motor vehicles or aircraft and buildings from single to sky-scrappers, just to name a few.
These designs can also be used to determine the costs and quantities required in the actual construction. The models can also be analyzed for structural weaknesses. By simply changing the material to be used in a component, the structural strength of the final product can be determined even before a scale model is built.
Through 3-D models, animation of the design can provide different views of the product from various angles both from inside or outside the structure. The entertainment industry is now a big user of animation of 3-D models for website presentation to full-length movies.
The development of the desktop PC has resulted in numerous products being available on the market. This has not only made CAD cheaper and available to small players but has allowed the expansion of the system to cover a wider range of uses and professions.
The use of CAD has resulted in lower production cost of manufacture. The designer needs not spend a lot of time bending over a drafting table, but can with a few mouse clicks turn out very detailed drawings in a short space of time. Changes in the design can also be accomplished in very short order. As with other professions, CAD drafting and design services are now available to all industries. Provision of these services has been made possible by the developments in the computer industry. Relatively inexpensive software and hardware make it easy for a designer to come up with a design for a product in minimal time and cost.
