Why Do Men Sleep After Sex?

Steve Thompson
One of the familiar complaints women have is that men often fall asleep right after sex. There are several factors that contribute to the desire for sleep following sexual intercourse, and it is certainly more powerful in men than it is in women.

First of all, sex usually takes place in the evening or at night when men are already tired to begin with. They've been at work all day, played with the kids in the afternoon, and are ready to have sex and then go to sleep. Sexual intercourse - whether it is overly active or not - will tire men out even further, so that when sex has ended, they are ready to pass out. Sex is also relaxing and soothing, which will add to the post-coital stupor they fall into.

Men also ejaculate at the climax of sex, which releases a surge of horomones that lead to sleepiness and relaxation. After sex, men typically are lethargic and completely relaxed, which will also induce sleep much faster than normal.

When men ejaculate, they have just experienced a high level of tension in the body - even if it is good tension. Afterward, they experience the release, and begin to fall down from that high level of tension. This makes most men physically exhausted.

Also, many men have learned through trial and error - or through reading magazine articles - that holding one's breath prior to and during orgasm will highten the sensations caused by climax. Many men will hold their breath when they first start to feel the beginning of their orgasm. Holding the breath causes deprivation of oxygen to the brain, which causes sleepiness. Sometimes men feel so lethargic after holding their breath during sex that their fatigue might even extend into the next day.

Women, on the other hand, rarely fall asleep directly following sex because the female orgasm actually heightens awareness. Women are more likely to be more awake after sex than men, and may even desire a "second round" much faster than men would want to contemplate doing it again. This is part of the reason why women are the traditional cuddlers after sex; their minds are awake, and they want to talk or relax until they become sleepy enough to fall asleep.

If you are concerned about your man falling asleep after sex, there are ways to increase the energy level. Having a cup of coffee before having sex - or even after sex - can make the mind more alert. You can also try having sex somewhere besides the bedroom, so the man has to get up in order to go to bed. Having sex in the mornings or afternoons will also decrease the desire for sleep right after sex.

  • Having sex at night means that the man is going to be more tired.
  • Orgasms produce horomones that initiate sleepiness and relaxation.
  • Drinking coffee or going for a walk before sex can make for a more alert mind.

  • We demand....a SHRUBBERY! 4/7/2011

Here we go again: If we make so much as a grimace, some women (thankfully a minority) will fling the pains of childbirth, menstruation, etc. in our direction. (I'm not counting occasions during periods.) Why? Because they see themselves as constant victims and refuse to empower themselves like other, stronger women do. Grow the **** up! BTW it's seriously is difficult staying awake. I don't know why; I'm just as much a slave to my own bodily functions as you are.

Because they can and do. Men in general fall asleep if there's nothing else they must do. IE, go to work, house (lol) or yard work, pick up kids, grocery shop, you name it. Women's hormones are so high after childbirth, but yet unless we are able to, we don't fall asleep. We have other stuff to do, hormones or not streaming through our blood. There's a difference between needing sleep because of exhaustion of childbirth (bleeding doesn't help with energy!!) and exhaustion from all the energy going to baby and/or young children. Men can't handle that either!! Also through pain, women MUST do alot of work.. but yet, we do it. Men.. phew

By the way, what's not mentioned are these hormones that are in women to begin with at higher levels, but yet we don't fall asleep!

One thing I've really noticed is he just doesn't care. He finishes first, it's a done deed for him. Leaves me wanting my CHOCOLATE!! He wants sex when HE wants it for whatever reason. Like the book, 'I'd Rather Eat Chocolate', I agree!! Always available, not dependent on someone else's moves, stops, etc. Outside of procreation, sex is OVERRATED. Men fall asleep because THEY WANT TO, wherever, whenever, whatever time it is. How many women fall asleep in church, etc, compared to women? Just leave me alone, do yourself a favorite and masturbate. I'll eat my chocolate for satisfacton!
