Why "How I Met Your Mother: Natural History" Has Given Fans Hope for This Season

Six seasons in and what was once a spectacular story line with engaging characters is simply turning into a mundane mediocrity. In the last few weeks it seems as if the writers of HIMYM have been trying to fill up air time with a pointless flirtatious feud between Ted and Zoey, h Marshall and Lily being unable to get pregnant, and Robin's frustrations toward her annoying co-anchor. Oh yeah, and Barney is still running around being - well, Barney. With all of that being said, this season was looking pretty hopeless; that is, until Monday's episode -Natural History.

During the show's prime, the characters felt like real people with real problems, and we couldn't wait to see what happened next regardless of whether or not Ted got closer to meeting the mother of his children. In the latest episode, we can thank the writers for deciding to go back to their roots. By throwing in some scenarios the writers have set the stage for what will hopefully be the first real character development of this season.

First, Marshal and Lily are confronting the long festering issue of Marshall having given up his ideals to be a big corporate lawyer for GNB. This is of course a surprise since we were all under the impression that the couple had resigned to the fact that Marshall was a good person no matter what. Whether this is the show being inconsistent or an opportunity for some growth we will have to wait and see.

It also seems as if the ridiculously drawn out feud between Ted and Zoey is finally over as both characters have made their amends. Ted being a successful architect takes a backseat to Ted being a good person, which happens to be one of the main themes of the show anyway.

And finally, after Barney and Robin spend the night groping museum artifacts HIMYM throws us a curveball. In a move that came completely out of nowhere, Barney may have finally found out who his father is. Fortunately, this was a much better set up than the predictable Wayne Brady episode.

With character set ups in place, let's see if the writers can deliver the charm we once fell in love with.

I stopped watching around season three, although I love the show and have been meaning to catch up with the DVDs. My plan was to wait until the series ended, we finally find out who the mother is, and then watch the rest of them :-)
