Why You Might Be Too Choosy when Picking a Boyfriend/Girlfriend

Marie Dubuque
Of course you want to find a partner who shares your same interests, has similar goals and ambitions. But if you are constantly searching for that perfect person, you could be missing out on someone who you really connect with; someone who could become your lifelong partner. But you were too "picky" to even realize it.

Qualities you should look for when choosing a potential girlfriend/boyfriend:

He/she should be a great listener. That is far and away the number one personality trait you should be searching for. Say you are on a first date and you look across the table to see this person stuffing his face while at the same time, elaborating non-stop about his seemingly endless life story. He hasn't asked one single question about you. If you could, I would leave immediately, right after he finishes his saga about the perils of middle school. Trust me, it won't get any better from here. But being the polite person that you are, finish the date, promise to text, then delete that phone number the minute he gets in his car.

He/she should be asking questions about you. You should be looking for someone who inquires about you; someone who cares enough to want to get to know you. If you go through an entire evening where you don't get a word in, yet you know every one of his favorite sports, movies and vacation destinations, he's not the one.

Opposites attract. It would be nice to find someone who likes the same music, watches sports, and plays the same video games that you do. But don't make it a deal-breaker if he doesn't. Because often, over time you might develop some of his interests, and he, yours. And you don't have to do every single thing together. If you like sky diving and his idea of adventure is a walk on the beach, he can watch you jump from a plane, and you can stroll with him along the sand. You can change someone's interests, but you can't change their lack of compassion. Find someone who really and truly cares about your thoughts, feelings, hopes and dreams, and you will have found your soul mate.
