Why This Mom Applauds and Endorse McDain's Ban on Kids Under Six

Miss Fortune

I knew it was going to happen. It was only a matter of time. Personally I was more than a little stoked when McDain's Restaurant made the move to ban kids under the age of six from dining at the establishment. I'm a parent but I'm also someone that likes to eat a meal in peace, that means without kids throwing tantrums, oblivious parents ignoring their offspring and having food flung all over the place. If I am paying $22.00 (or more) for a meal I want to be able to enjoy it.

One person made a comment about the ban being 'unfair', that there should also be a policy against people talking loudly on their cell phones or causing a disturbance at the bar. To those I say this, don't throw rocks when you live in a glass house. It's a lot easier to tell an adult to take the conversation outside than it is to walk up to a parent and tell them to keep their mutant under control. Yes, I said mutant. There are kids, there are demon seeds and then there are mutants.

Honestly, this isn't the place for kids. I have been there a few times for functions and while it isn't a five star eatery it is still not the place for kids. The only exception I could see is if it were an anniversary, private function or birthday but even then, that is pushing it a little. I applaud the management of McDain's for this type of restriction. Not one makes a fuss when Dave & Busters imposes a rule like this banning under age patrons after a certain hour. Most casinos I have been to on the East and West Coast have strict rules about underage patrons; after a certain time you can't even enter the casino to get to a restaurant or buffet.

So why is McDain's being thrown up on the cross? Because they are straight shooters (and that has nothing to do with golf). They received enough complaints about unattended children screaming and ruining meals that they felt it in the best interest of their business to simply eliminate the problem. Honestly, when the ban takes place I will probably be more likely to make the trek there to have a nice meal. All of the parents that are in an uproar about it and saying that it is discriminatory need to take a step back and remember what it was like when they were non-breeders. How annoying it was to try to eat a meal with a whiney child pitching a fit. The twenty dollar Broiled Seafood Platter is going to taste a hell of a lot better in a childless environment.

I'm not a parent, but I agree with you nonetheless. ;o) I wish the rule could be applied in this church I'm investigating (ok, ok, I confess, I'm hanging with a bunch of giggly Mormon missionary girls.... they're cute!). Dunno if they have a childcare there, but if they do nobody uses it. It's weird... the grown ups wouldn't make a noise even to react to the speakers or in between musical numbers. It's as if they're afraid they'll get hit by lightning if they do. All the meanwhile the under 4 yrs old are bawling their heads off or escaping the parents' grip to wander up and down the aisle. Kinda makes you wonder how they go from unrulies to zombies in just a few years...

Excellent article with many valid points. I know many times in movie theaters as well people like to bring screaming children... Just sayin'! ; )

Great article, thanks! As a server I too am quite happy to see this. It gets so tiring getting the stink eye (if you are lucky) or a barbed tongue and 0 tip if I ask the parents nicely to calm their unruly child. When servers are balancing trays weighing 30 lbs or more and a running child smacks into them disaster could occur. I hope this becomes a trend!
