Why is Montana Fishburne's Porn Career Choice Such a Huge Scandal?

Montana Fishburne says that she wants to emulate Kim Kardashian. It's easy to see why she might want to emulate the popular socialite. Kim's famous looks, family money and extravagant lifestyle would make anyone salivate. But for Montana Fishburne, these are just a few things in life that she seeks. The media has been all over Montana Fishburne, attempting to dissect her desires and make some sort of sense out of them. Gossip blog sites ridiculed the young woman for choosing this particular career path. Plenty of famous celebrity kids have chosen unpopular paths, including adult entertainment. Why is Montana catching such a bad rap?

Straight Shooting

Montana has referenced Kim Kardashian's "cinematic debut" as the catalyst for her fame. In effect, we are all to believe that Kim leaked the sex tape in order to garner some publicity. Though we may never know whether this is really true, Montana brings up a valid point: The world has apparently "forgiven" (even celebrating) Kim Kardashian's indiscretions, propelling her further into the mainstream limelight. The world seems to embrace these "leaked" items; they are no longer cause for embarrassment. Montana has simply cut out the middleman and gotten straight to the point. Where porn is concerned, the direct route will perhaps always make people uncomfortable.

"Accidental" Indiscretions...

Human nature dictates that the same gift may be perceived differently based upon the way that it's wrapped. For all practical purposes, Montana Fishburne has packaged a popular issue in some pretty unsavory wrapping paper. Montana is not the first child of a Hollywood celebrity to enter the world of adult entertainment. But the Ubiquitous Sex Tape is a little bit different from a full-scale pornographic production. While the content may be the same, the sex tape screams "accidental." Making a porno movie says, "I want to be a star using my genitals."

The New Casting Couch

Perhaps what is most disturbing to people is the fact that Montana wishes to use her newfound porn career as a springboard into the mainstream. Entering the adult industry, as a way to become famous is something that people wonder about but never really pursue-let alone even admit aloud. But Montana's choice seems to disgust people more than anything. Montana Fishburne wouldn't be the first porn star to meander her way into mainstream TV and movies. That she has chosen this as a career path (especially at such a young age) engaging with various "strangers," is a tough pill to swallow. As much as we know sex sells, we as a society aren't quite ready to admit that we're willing to buy it.

Double, Double Standards

There are obviously still serious taboos surrounding pornography. Montana alleges that the people who seem to disagree the most with her choice are the same ones who enjoy these films in the privacy of their own homes. Is there a double standard? Perhaps that she is the daughter of an A-list Hollywood celebrity (Laurence Fishburne) has more to do with the public outcry. Would the world be as interested in the controversy if Montana Fishburne were the daughter of a white A-List celebrity? (Nuh-uh, don't go there.) If she were a different race, if she were older, if she were a man, if she hadn't used her famous last name, if the quality of porn was "better"... You could "if" a thing to death-until it becomes no more than a well-rehearsed opinion. The fact remains that there are thousands of young women who enter the porn industry with the belief that they are destined for stardom. But not all of them have "Morpheus" for a dad.
