Why Most American Students Are Not Very Good at Math

I'm a student from Vietnam. Now I'm in a college in America, try to finish my Bachelor degree. So, this will be the point of view of an Asian guy. I think one of the characters of American student is: you guys are not very good at Math! So, what is the reason?

1. I think maybe it's because of the attitude from the student. Most of American student will think: Why I must study Maths? I don't use it in life much ?! And I'm a practical person. So I won't study Maths ^_^

2. It is because of the attitude of the whole education system. In high school, looks like the most important subject is Physical Education ( basketball, football, baseball, tracks...) Maths is not a very big deal. And everybody must pass high school! So just make it's easy. I'm sorry to say this, guys, but the whole Maths in your high school is even easier than my Maths in my middle school back in Vietnam.

3.Another reason is: your measurement system! I think America is the only country still doesn't use SI system (the international measurement system). So you must always remember this kind of stuffs:
1 mile = 1.609 km
1 inch = 2.54 cm
1 kg = 2.2 pounds
...
Too much stuff to be confused, isn't it?

4. The last thing is, I think American Maths has problem! It's sound weird, isn't it? Let's me explain. I think American Maths has too much stuff to memorize. You guys make too many symbol and stuff to remember. For example:
csc A = 1 / sin A
sec A = 1 / cos A
the normal line is the line that perpendicular to the tangent line (calculus)
...
What's the hell is all that for, why you just write down "1 / sin A", so you don't need to remember that?

And in a lot of books, all you see are formulas and formulas, even in basic Maths. I think the beauty of basic Maths is you can easily predict all the formulas from a basic formula. So don't put too much stuff to memorize!

So, this is probably the reason why American students are not good at Maths. But you guys already have a joke about "as good at Maths as a Chinese", so maybe this is an old story ^_^
