Why Do Muslims Dislike Dogs?: Distressing Facts
As a non-Muslim, I find this attitude shocking and hard to understand. I found this out about six months ago chatting with some Muslims on an international forum. Somehow the subject of dogs came up. What I heard from them was that dogs are dirty, angels never enter a house with a dog, black dogs are evil, and Allah will penalize you for owning a dog. This news was so distressing I had to research further, and this article is the result of that.
In the Islamic religion they have the Quran that can be compared to the Christian Bible. There are also the Hadiths, which are supposed to be a supplementation for the quran. The Quran is to be considered the word of Allah, whereas the hadith is to be considered the word of Muhammad. Hadiths started being written hundreds of years after Muhammad's death. I find it interesting that the hadiths with negativity towards dogs, directly contradicts the teachings of the quran.
Here is a quote from an Islamic Web site called submission.org, "Fabricated hadiths contradict the Quran. Many of them narrated by Abu Hurayra. Abu Hurayra, whose name is translated as, father of the little cat, hated dogs and women and from his mouth came many hadiths that insulted women and cursed the dogs and make them undesirable animals that need to be avoided and in other hadiths killed." There is a small number of Muslims that believe the hadiths are corrupt, and among them you may find some dog lovers. That is the dividing line. If a Muslim follows the hadiths they will dislike dogs and in some circumstances may even try to hurt them. As a side note, if you ever take a look at the hadiths many of them are violent in nature. While the quran seems to discourage violence.
There is not a single phrase in the Quran with anything negative about dogs. In Suri 18 of the Quran, it tells us a story about a group of men in a cave with a dog. In this story it says that angels entered the cave. Yet, in the hadith about dogs it clearly states that angels will never enter a place where a dog is inside. If Quran is considered to be the actual word of Allah, only conclusion to be made here is that certain hadiths are simply based on the prejudice of some Muslim scholars.
One of the most recent troubling events regarding Muslims and dogs is what is going on in Iran right now. The Iranian government has actually declared dogs to be un-Islamic and dirty. They are actually confiscating pet dogs and taking them to a filthy place and shoving them in small cages. Iran is threatening dog owners that they are un-Islamic. They are actually taking a risk to get their dog back. Their dog may die in the detention center or it may be given back providing that they never show dog in public. (source)

They studi THE dogs and humans saliva,,,,and guess what?????they find on humans saliva more bacteries and dirtnees,,dogs saliva is cleaner,,,I find more dirty à 50 years old man ho marry 14year old girl....and have 4 wifes and sleep with all,that is no hygienic,i prefer dogs on my familie ,,they protect your home and they give you happyness,doga are clean if THE owners are clean

I know that in the Quran, the story of dwellers of the Cave (Surah 18) mentions a dog's company. I am a Muslim myself and I have a 12 year old dog and she's my life sleeps in my room or my mom's. My whole family loves dogs and many of my relatives have dogs,

very intersting to read your words and i finished it all even you are wrong so i can undersatand your idea...i am very happy not because you missunderstand about islam but how you look for informations about dogs or animal in our relgion ISLAM.so please knowthat the islam the first association which put laws how to treat animal .QURAN is devided by chapters named with famous articls ..the biggest chapter with name of BAKERA (cow) and NAMEL(ANTS) and i return to the dog ...our HADITH ordred us to treat the dog as pet and put in our garden and avoid the maximum to enter our house ONLY for essentiels reasons as SECURITY & BLINDE MAN & OTHERS REASONS ......because dog is the most reservoir for many PARASITES MALADIES as i am doctor ....i can tell you the germes love the milieu which the dog live in
@Author: Well written article. Just a few problems with it.
1. You say that Muslims don't like dogs and shed no light on the basis of this claim. Was there a statistical survey that was conducted on the basis of which you are making this claim? I guess not.
1.1. Along the same lines as your thought process. Am I to assume that all Caucasians (read: whites) like to burn crosses and kill blacks (read: African Americans)? Or am I to assume that all Germans are of the same vision as Hitler? Or am I to assume that everyone from Hungary is of the same viewpoint as Atilla the Hun?
That would be STUPID and incorrect of me, right?
2. In your third paragraph. (counting the first line as a paragraph) you say that the Quran can be compared to the christian bible. Unfortunately this is far from the truth. The Quran was written down in the lifetime of the prophet and compiled later. The bible was written down approximately 300 years later. Yes, we believe in the teachings of Jesus
You don't know what you are talking. Where did you find hadith saying "hurt dogs" or any other animal? Even there are storys which tells that one prostitute woman is put into heaven instead of hell because she gave water to a thirsty dog. One man was put into hell because he tied a cat and did not provided food to cat. I know you are a ctritic of islam, but dont lie to express your criticism towards Islam

Angels do not need to go inside homes with dogs, because that homes already have angels inside, dogs can perfectly understand the good and the evil (i think dogs and dolphins are the only who can do it), and never, absolutely never they will act for evil, they are the animal form of angels. About saliva, i don't know where in Quran says it, but many studies have proven that dog's saliva is cleaner than human's, and even cleaner than cats' (known for clean themselves with it and lick their wounds for clean them), study human's saliva and dog's saliva in microscopy, and tell me where you find more bacteries and dirtyness. What is totally a crime is to don't allow the dog be a dog, and is a big prolem that many humans treat dogs as if they were humans, not dogs, or, in other words, wolves.
