Why is Networking Important?

Jerry M.
Networking is the practice of making connections with others, and it might be the single most important thing when it comes to starting a business. It can lower the costs of starting and maintaining the business, and even offer opportunities for growth.

Networking Saves Money and Time
Imagine that you are ready to start the business of your dreams. Whatever it may be, it will cost money. But where does that money come from? It's rare that a person can finance the whole business without breaking a sweat; it's more likely that you'll be struggling in the beginning. Wouldn't it be nice if you could cut costs? This is where networking comes in.

Let's say that to start your business, you need supplies such as pens, papers, staplers, etc. If you happen to have a friend who works at a company that provides this, you might be able to get a discount. Not only can networking save you money in this way, it can save you time.

Instead of looking around for a professional to help you out, you can simply open up your phone book and call up one of your friends. Take myself for an example. I have a website that I'm looking to develop more, and without even asking, my friend offered to design a logo for it. This gesture saved me the money I would have needed to hire a graphic designer to build me a logo. It also saved me the hassle of having to look through portfolios to find a good graphic designer.

Networking Offers Opportunities for Growth
Saving money and time is nice, but networking's biggest advantage might be the opportunity for growth. It's hard to promote your product when there's so many competitors. So how do you get around this? You might have guessed it. Networking.

Imagine that you have a new product on your hand, but you have no way to get the word out to your potential customers. If you happened to know a friend that ran a newspaper, website, television station, or any other form of media, you could ask them to put out the word for you. You would be reaching more customers this way than you would be trying to spread the word alone.

You could also partner with another company and do cross-promotions, giving exposure to both yourself and your partner. There are more opportunities when working with others than when working alone.

Managing a business alone is almost impossible. Sometimes, other people have skills that you don't have, and networking provides a means for you to harness those skills. So next time there's chance to meet someone new, do it. After all, it can't hurt. And the potential it provides is endless.
