Why You Should Never Overcrowd Your Fish Tank

Shannon Frye
You will always want to purchase a fish tank and keep in mind how many fish you will want to place in the fish tank before you make the purchase. You don't want to purchase a 10 gallon tank and place 100 fish inside of the tank. Overcrowding your fish tank will lead to a number of problems. You will only want to place about 1 inch of fish per gallon of water in your fish tank. You don't want to place more fish in your aquarium than you have room for. This will stress out your fish which will lead to many problems.

The more fish you have in your tank the better risk that one or more of your fish will be aggressive and/or territorial. These fish are bullies in the fish world. They will chase around all of your fish and they will not let them hide in certain decorations or go near certain areas. You want to avoid purchasing fish which are aggressive and territorial. It will only lead to all of your fish getting stressed out which will cause all of them to get sick. When one fish gets sick, all of your fish will get sick.

Overcrowding your fish tank will lead to more fish food and more uneaten fish food. This will cause your nitrate levels to rise. They will also produce more fish waste which will lead to a higher ammonia level. When you have a lot of fish in the tank it will make more work for you than it normally would. You will have to do more water changes because the ammonia and nitrate levels will be higher. You will need to clean the fish tank as often as possible. You would normally have to clean the tank at least once every two weeks but you might have to clean it more now with more fish.

Overcrowding leads to nothing but stress. You will have more ammonia in the water and you will have a higher nitrate level because there is more uneaten food which is decaying at the bottom of the tank. You will have more fish and a higher risk of aggressive fish which will cause stress as well. You never want to place a lot of fish in your tank or eventually all of the fish will get sick from being stressed out at all times. You will need to place some of the fish in a new tank to avoid any problems.
