Fans have to buy preseason tickets to buy season tickets for most if not all NFL teams. This drives up their costs and probably deters some fans from buying season tickets for their favorite team. Currently there are four NFL preseason games for most teams and I think the number should be dropped to two.
Preseason games are dangerous and teams dread losing a starting player in a meaningless game. You have starting players taking it easy and trying not to get hurt, going against some players going all out trying to make a roster. That is why you usually see starters against starters in NFL preseason games. That way people trying to earn a starting or even a roster spot can compete against each other.
A hamstring, ankle or other injuries in preseason can extend into the regular season for NFL players. Knee, neck and other serious injuries can end a season or a career. It is really bad for a NFL player to end their career in the preseason.
I think the NFL needs less preseason games and a longer regular season. I would love to see 18 regular season game with two bye weeks and a 2 game preseason. You would also need to expand the rosters to go to an 18 game regular season but that is for another article.
I feel that NFL coaches can evaluate their players in mini camp, training camp and in two preseason games. The NFL is a money driven league anyway, the players who make the most money are going to win starting jobs in most cases.
Recently Darin Gantt of the Charlotte Observer and Rock Hill Herald pointed out to me that some undrafted free agents make NFL rosters. However I feel they are few and far in between. Money talks and players in whom the team has the most investment will win the starting jobs. The NFL needs less preseason games to evaluate talent and I feel the preseason is simply to milk fans of more money.

Post a CommentI totally agree! Less pre-season, more regular season games...and um, Go Steelers ;)
Agreed. Def don't need 4 preseason games.
Good points!
I agree, I did not like seeing Eli get his head bashed in before the season even started!
BRAVO Randy! Over the years, I've watched less and less NFL because it just isn't the same as it was 10 years ago. The drive to get more money out of the fans seems to overwhelm the desire to play a game. The preseason just doesn't really matter anymore.
