Why Nintendo Doesn't Try to Push the Graphics to the Limit

Bruce Bostwick
To be honest, Nintendo has never been about putting out the highest definition of graphics for games they created and that's been going on since the NES days. It is clearly obvious on that level the Xbox 360 and the PS3 have higher graphics than the Wii. It has never been Nintendo's philosophy to do such a thing but mainly to have the games go in the fun factor and new ways to play video games. It is something called being innovative and different from the rest of the competition.

It has gone on since the NES days of trying to come up with new ways of playing games. For instance, there was the Zapper game used mainly for games back them for Duck Hunt, one of the most known games to use the Zapper and was developed by Nintendo actually. To go even further and illustrate that point, the motion with the Wii Remote or sometimes called "Wiimote", there was the Power Glove though not developed by Nintendo but by Mattel, it required the use of motion with your hand. It's that the Wii now has taken care of any mistakes and have made it something of a great gaming tool and had exercise with the arms a bit. In fact, looking at those Dance Revolution games with the Dance Pad, it actually originated from the Power Pad.

Looking at the history of Nintendo and how long they've been around in the video game market, they could push the technological and graphics boundaries up to par with the competing systems but they chose a different method. The mindset was that trying to be at the same level and doing the same type of style like Microsoft and Sony of today could be like old dinosaurs battling it out to the point of extinction. It's not necessarily a bad move and should be praised considering the fact that it helps separating themselves from the pack.

With the Wii out on the market, the goal has been to get back the fun factor and get Nintendo back up after falling down with the last 2 systems despite being different. With the Nintendo 64, it was the last system in the console division to use cartridges and might have had a factor in them getting beaten by Sony and the Gamecube, well that's unknown exactly what happened but probably could be due to the N64, which effected the Gamecube and that's about it. Though they never pulled it off, they tried their hand at Virtual Reality with the Virtual Boy and it failed in such a convincing manner that it was taken out of the market almost as quickly as it came out.The conclusion shows that they are not stupid. The important factor is to have games with decent controls, a good plot, and the fun factor. If a game is fun, it will be bought more often than not. They have major franchises like Mario, Legend of Zelda, and Metroid, Super Smash Bros. going strong for them. In fact, some of the most notable franchises got the start there with Castlevania, Megaman, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and others have made it there so it shows they can make games and begin something. From that perspective, when they make the next system, it probably will not push the graphics levels to the limits like Microsoft and Sony tend to want to do but will try to continue that philosophy of trying to come up with new ways to playing video games.

While Nintendo has never pushed the graphics to the limits, it has inspired such items as the Wiimote, and the Dance Pad.

I definitely agree that with Nintendo, it is about fun and not graphics. Right now I am trying to decide between the Wii or the PS3 for Christmas. Better graphics or more game involvement? I already have the 360, which I love! I usually for graphics however. I think the Wii is best for the elderly (trivia games and what not) and kids!

great article...and good point Al...but you have to think...would the games be as fun if the graphics were on par with other competing companies...i'm a huge fan of the Wii and i have to confess that i love my Wii person just how she is...if the graphics were any different it would change the context and the concept of the games. But i could definitely see a company going for the best of both worlds on this one.

Interesting. But does this leave an opening for someone to compete on the basis of good game play AND great graphics?
