Why the Nintendo Remains My Favorite Video Game Console of All Time

Lisa Mason
I'm a gamer girl. Everyone who knows me knows that. But what some people may not know is that while I play mostly PC games today, the Nintendo still remains my favorite video game console of all time. The Nintendo (NES) was my first introduction to video games, aside from the arcades. My family was poor growing up so I didn't even get one when they first came out in 1985. In fact, I was only three years old at the time so if we could afford them, I doubt my parents would have bought me one.

But by the time I was in about third grade, my friends had the NES and I was a Super Mario Brothers pro in no time at all. There's nothing quite like the feeling of shooting clay targets in Duck Hunt while that stupid hunting dog laughs at you. Seriously, who didn't' secretly wish they could shoot the dog? I know I aimed at him point-blank many times...

In those days of Duck Hunt, I never would have imagined that not that many years later I would be shooting zombies in L4D2 or spending countless hours of cartoon-ish mayhem in Team Fortress 2.

I remember spending hours upon hours at my friends' houses trying to beat Super Mario Bros. and then there was Metroid and Contra and don't forget the games that were made after our favorite Saturday morning cartoon characters like Duck Tales.

Games like Dragon Warrior would set the stage for my later love of the Final Fantasy series. Who doesn't remember renting Mega Man 2 from the local video store? We had a little mom-and-pop shop back then who must have made a killing off of us renting that cartridge over and over again.

And what is probably the most classic memory we all have of the NES- blowing into that darn cartridge when your game froze up!

While we have the Wii and the DS and we've had every other version of a Nintendo gaming platform to come out over the years, nothing brings back the same deep memories as the NES.

I have so many fond memories of the NES. It shaped the gamer that I would later become. Now I play games every day, I enjoy gaming with my family and I even earn a living writing about video games. I've been an admin, a guild leader a beta tester and more. It all began in the late 80s on that Nintendo Entertainment System. Thank you Nintendo!

Nice article! I also have fond memories of the NES, I was about 10 when they came out, and I remember bugging my parents until they got us one. I think my first love was Atari tho... in any case, this was a very enjoyable read, Lisa, and I agree with your perspective :)
