You can keep your ears open at church, meetings, other gatherings, etc. and perhaps learn of people who fall into this category that you can do things for locally, which can include not only mailing a card but also perhaps mailing or taking them small gifts from time to time.
Through various online sources and organizations, you should easily be able to find such a person. For instance, there is Chemo Angels where you can be assigned someone with cancer who needs encouragement and friendship as they undergo treatments, You can request the age, sex, and other requisites that you prefer to write to; and you will get a list of what the person likes, collects, etc. to make it easy to sometimes include a "tuck in" of some type that they will enjoy.
There are many people in nursing homes who have no family and no one to pay any attention to them either in person or through the mail. You could locate this type of person by telephoning your local nursing homes and asking for someone that falls into that category. I am sure the administrative staff or the nurses or aides could quickly come up with suggestions.
If you are in online groups, you could request that the members send you the name and address of someone in their acquaintance who would appreciate such a gesture on a regular basis. The person could be living alone, be in a facility, or perhaps even be in the military where they always look forward to mail.
There are so many possibilities for you to do this good deed.
You will also be aware of small inexpensive mailable items as you shop in dollar stores or elsewhere, and you can collect humorous or "thinking of you" or holiday cards so that you will be prepared to send one every week along with words of cheer.
This is a commitment that will make your heart "sing" and make it fun at the same time that you make someone else's life less lonely as they look forward to hearing from you on a regular basis.
I am a Card Angel myself and would be happy to answer any of your questions.

I think that being a card angel is a nice idea. I always like to pick out cards for lonely people. Thanks.
This is a wonderful idea!
That is such a great idea. I met a lady this week that is a soldier's angel and she sends cards and small gifts to our soldiers. Truly a nice thing to do for anyone. Great article.
The world would be a better place if more people took the time to care about others the way you have!
very compassionate thing to do--great article--keep plugging away
Great idea Jackie!
CARLA - How wonderful of your Mom to do that!! I think I would have been that way if I worked in such a place since I so enjoyed sending cards with tuck-ins to my first Chemo Angel patient for four years until I lost her, plus I do it with certain pals as well, especially if they've had surgery or have serious problems -- we can all use mail showing that people care about us and try to cheer us up.
