Why I Do Not Support the Liberty University College Democrats Club
Liberty University-- They're ALL Republican Deep Down, Afterall
After hearing many rebuttals from the club, I decided to do my homework. I had heard that the club had a pro-life, as well as a "pro-traditional marriage" stance from the get go, so I visited their website, where their constitution is posted. I was disappointed, but not surprised to see that what I had heard, was correct. In Article 1, Section B, the purpose states: "The College Democrats pledges itself to support the philosophy and candidates of the Democratic Party. The Liberty University College Democrats support and will seek to promote Christian values within the group's discussion of politics. We will take a pro-life stance and support the traditional form of marriage."
As someone who has witnessed seeing statements in other printed sources, with members saying that they are committed to supporting equality for all, I fail to see how, exactly, these people are Democrats, after reading that. Last night, I was responded to on a friend's Facebook status, saying that some members are pro-choice and for gay rights and marriage, while others were on the other side of both. That's all well and good, the the club's official stance is what grinds my gears. No wonder so many lines are being crossed, and it seems like they're giving in to Liberty's every whim, just to earn their right to exist. Sure, their stances might have been set in stone from the get go, but this just means it'll be easier for them to conform to Liberty's demands.
My concern is, where do they stand on other issues? Are these people pro-gun? Are they pro-war, justifying it as Biblical, like a lot of Christians do? What is their stance on education and health care? These are all valid questions that need to be answered.
I'm really disappointed, because I used to serve on the Obama campaign with some of them, and my suspicions of them have been confirmed. They really are just out to make a name for themselves, instead of doing any good with the real Democratic stances on issues. The only thing that makes these kids Democratic, is because they hated Bush-- nothing more, nothing less. I just hope this club can re-evaluate itself and make sense. Until then, I don't see why Liberty has pulled the plug on the club, because it's full of people just like them.
With that being said, I am one of the few people who consider themselves a Democrat, but do not support the Liberty University College Democrats club.
