Why "Online" Education is Gaining in Popularity

And Why it Just May Be for You!

Donna Thacker
Online education offers an opportunity for many people to increase their knowledge. They may not otherwise be able to do so, because of time constraints, or proximity to a college. Further education is just a click away, and works for a variety of classes, both part time and full time. An online student must be dedicated and disciplined to succeed, as there are no teachers watching over you. Online education is gaining in popularity and here is why:

Accessibility

Enrolling in an online college or school is as easy as researching to find the online school of interest and then filling out the online application. Hometown colleges may also offer full or partial online classes. This helps to accommodate those who work and attend college. They are able to log on and complete their courses around their work hours, as time allows.

Some full time students prefer the flexibility of attending a portion of the classes at a college campus, and taking other classes at home on their computer. This way, they can interact with teachers and other students on a part time basis, while pursuing even more classes from the comfort of their home. They get the social interaction of college life and the peace and quiet of studying at home.

Online Based Education

There are many accredited schools online. There is no campus to maintain, so the pricing for the online courses may be cheaper than a mainstream college. Many allow you to start with a small upfront payment and continue paying a small monthly balance as you pursue your education.

Enrollment can be done in a few simple steps, and many of the online schools offer a very generous payment arrangement that includes the tuition and the cost of books. Most of them are also "go at your own pace" type schools which mean that the student can complete the course as quickly as they would like, or work on the education as time allows.

In some cases, required books are automatically shipped to the student as the work progresses. The books are all accredited books that require the student to take and submit a test after each chapter. A computer may grade your work, but some schools have professors that oversee the progress and offer help when necessary.

The student must study the chapters, and do the work to earn the education. An end of the semester exam is given as well. Many online schools require that a "proxy" be present to administer the exam. This means that a person of your choosing receives your exam papers in the mail and is present while you take the exam. You are given a time limit, but it is usually an open book exam.

This is to insure that you are actually studying and learning the material, instead of copying answers from the work books. An online student must discipline their self in studying and learning the material in order to succeed with an online education. The grades are earned, just as if the student was attending a college classroom.

Online Statistics

A US News and World Report indicated that more than 4 million students enrolled in online education courses in the fall of 2009 and online based University of Phoenix reports an increase of 20% enrollment in the past year.

These online educators make starting or enhancing an education as accessible as your computer. They will help you by providing an affordable, yet accredited education. Statistics show that continued education not only helps to keep your mind active, it may also improve your position in your work place.

Even if you are not interested in an online school to pursue a business career, there are many that offer non credit type courses. You could pursue a hobby or learn to garden. There is an online course for just about everything you could be interested in. Check out the sources below to see what an online course could do for you!
