"I'm a fan of Optimus Prime." This was one of the first things my husband Rick said to me when we met. Through the years, I've learned more than I ever thought I would about "Transformers" and Autobot leader Optimus Prime through my husband's intense fascination with the character.
Aside from being cool because "he's a big rig that talks like John Wayne," Rick admires Optimus for his various qualities, seen throughout the "Transformers" animated series and movie as well as the live action trilogy.
Good Leader
Optimus Prime exemplifies qualities of a good leader. Specifically, Optimus:
- Leads by example. Optimus never asks the Autobots or his human allies to participate in a battle or task unless he will risk his existence as well. In "Transformers: Dark of the Moon," Optimus Prime decides to take a stand against the Decepticons on multiple occasions.
- Cares about followers. Optimus cares about everyone he leads. While Decepticon leader Megatron shows nothing but anger when his comrades fall, Optimus expresses extreme sadness whenever he loses a team member or sees an Autobot or human in harm's way.
- Stands up for ideals. In the live action "Transformers" movies, Optimus has a clear goal when it comes to humans: protect them. He is always clear about what he stands for and he meets his enemies face to face instead of sneak-attacking as the Decepticons often do.
- Makes decisions quickly. Because the Decepticons are so tricky, Optimus often has to make decisions swiftly. He doesn't cloud his words with flowery language; he gives orders, and even his battle speech and narration is forthright.
Never Give Up
Optimus constantly encourages his peers to succeed in a goal by continual attempts. No matter how many times the Decepticons win battles, Optimus is concerned with winning the war by using a persistent attitude.
This mentality is particularly relevant in "Transformers: Dark of the Moon." Some of the more destructive scenes are reminiscent of invasions or terrorist events, but throughout these occurrences, Optimus remains persistent about his goal. When all falls around him, he still takes a stand.
Good Role Model
Optimus Prime is a wonderful role model for children and adults. As a child, my husband saw Optimus as a father figure, especially when his own father had to work long hours to provide for the family. Optimus guides both the humans and younger Autobots (like Bumblebee), often watching them but letting them learn from their own mistakes.
Painted red and blue, it's easy for Americans to identify with Optimus Prime and his message of persistence despite adversity. Optimus emphasizes the importance of truth, honesty and fairness, always standing up to defend those who are weaker.
