Why Organic Meat is Better

Paul Mann
You have heard that eating organic, or free range meat, is better for you than eating factory raised meat, but do you know why? Let's look at a few reasons.

The most obvious of such is the humane aspect. Here you will find animals that have allowed to graze as they are inclined, are able to walk around when they want, and are not tortured and treated as a soulless commodity, simply made to be bought and sold without any real life of its own.

However, for many people, this isn't reason enough to buy free-range organic, so let's at some other facts about organic meat that will also entice you.

According to Annie Bond from care2.com, she says a big one is Mad Cow disease. Everyone likes a good burger or steak, but no one wants to risk central nervous or brain damage because of it. With organic meat, the chance of this disease occurring is practically 0%.

Mad Cow disease is caused by grinding up cows and using them as feed. In other words, forcing cows to become cannibals. By this practice, the disease manifests and spreads.

Free-range organic graze when they desire and on natural foods, with a wide and nutritious range of feed. Thereby, they cannot become contaminated by this disease, and neither can you.

There is also the lack of hormones and antibiotics used. This can cause a wide spectrum of problems for people who eat too much. Cancer for one (as cancer is caused by mutations to the genes, and after four mutations you being to grow a tumor. If you don't think eating a cannibal cow, injected with bovine human growth hormone has a good chance of causing this disease then maybe you should really take it into consideration).

Also, since the animals are given a wider array of good feed, they are better for you as well. Cows that are forced to eat, and eat simply to grow, are not going to be nearly as useful as a cow that eats naturally.

There is also the green footprint problem. Organic, free-range ranches use manure in their fields to help grow more crops for feed. Factories, however, pollute with all the manure accumulated by excessive feeding, and just not using manure to its potential. Thereby, tons upon tons of feces is wasted and becomes infected.

With all the extra feces around, the chances of E.coli increase dramatically. Now, while it is still possible to get this disease from organic free-range meat, the chance is nearly impossible. For one, the manure is "pure," or not contaminated by all the injections. Also, it is used and not thrown in a pile to rot. So this disease is not entirely preventable, but you are much less at risk.

Choose organic meat, for the animal and for yourself. You'll be living better, and feeling better about the way you live.
