Why Organic Milk is a Better Choice

With Many Options, See Why Organic Milk is Worth the Price

Mike Burnside
At one time, it seemed that we only had a couple of choices in our local dairy case, regular or organic milk. However, stroll by that same dairy case now and you will see a vast number of choices in milk. Not only can you choose what fat percentage, you can get lactose-free, organic, flavored, milk from cows or goats, soy or rice, almond or coconut, and the list goes on. With so many choices, why would you buy organic milk? Here are five great reasons that organic milk is better for you and worth the price.

1. Organic Milk is Free of Hormones
The human body does not need the hormones that some dairy cows have been treated with. Cows that are used to produce organic milk are required by the U.S. Department of Agriculture to have not been treated with bovine growth hormones.

2. Organic Milk is Free of Antibiotics
For milk to have the organic label, the cows producing it must not have received antibiotics for any reason. In a non-organic dairy farm, antibiotics are often added to the animal feed as a precaution. Adding antibiotics in this way can contribute to the growing issue of bacterial resistance, which is the ability of bacteria being able to withstand the antibiotics normally used to destroy them.

3. Organic Milk is Pesticide Free
Organic milk must come from cows that have been fed grass or seeds that have not been treated by pesticides or have been grown from genetically modified seeds. Pesticides that are sprayed on to grain or feed and then given to cows can be passed on through their milk to humans. The frequent use of pesticides and the subsequent runoff of those chemicals have led to one of the biggest causes of water pollution as well.

4. Organic Milk is High in CLA
Organic milk is shown to have higher levels of conjugated linoleic acid, a fatty acid that has been linked to having anticancer and anti-inflammatory elements. CLA may help to reduce the risk of heart disease as well as help the body reduce body fat and increase lean muscle mass.

5. Organic Milk Helps Cows
According to organic standards set by the FDA, cows producing organic milk must have access to open pastures. This means that organic milk cows will see the light of day and have access to being outdoors, enjoying fresh air, and warm sunshine.

Grew up loving milk, and now it's gotta be organic. May I say "Hey! That's quite a Holstein!"

There is a particular brand I periodically buy, but the flavor changed and I quit buying it.

Interesting report. I was attracted to it because of something I heard on the radio--about how hormone/pesticide milk was impacting the physical development of young children.
