Why Pay? Here's a Free Anti Virus Tool and Specific Directions for All the Settings
Protect Yourself - Don't Get Hit by Viruses- Keep All Surfers Safe
I happen to be a certified A+ and Net + tech and find that most of the software other people recommend is "fluff" instead of good quality commercial products. I have used this product for years without a problem on every one of my machines. I actually gave up using Norton because this product is Free and really works very well. AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition provides basic security protection on home and non-commercial PCs. This is not a trial version but will update on preset schedules and will catch the junk that the hackers and script kiddies throw at us.
You are going to download AVG Anti-Virus Free Version from http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/lng/us/tpl/v5 then click on it to install it on your home computer.
Then start this program and you will see the Control Center showing the security status of different areas.
On the left side of the Control Center are three buttons showing Test Center, Help Topics and Check for Updates.
Click on the Test center now. This will open a scree showing buttons for Scan Computer, Scan Selected Areas and Check for Updates.
Click on the button - Scan Selected Areas. This screen shows a tree diagram for your drives and attachments to your computer. You can speed up a total scan by not checking CD's and extra drives.
Now click on the scheduler button on the left. You will see a Test plan basic mode and a update plan basic mode on the right. It will show the last date and time of your last scan. This will verify if you have been running the system properly.
At the bottom of the screen click Edit schedule now. Click to check for updates and set a schedule. Close this window now.
Close the scheduled tasks window now.
We are now back on the main screen showing the words - Security Status. Click on the button on the bottom right that says Properties. Look down and see the words Display component and the sub wording below that. Check the box that says - Display component and click OK.
Now you AVG protection will show up on the Task Bar when you run your computer and it will display a message if something is wrong. This is a very simple to use program compared to some I have paid big money for in the past.
Enjoy the protection.
