Why Pay More for Organic?

In my home, we buy produce that is the cheapest. In our neck of the woods, that usually means local produce. The organic varieties in our grocery stores are usually more expensive than the conventional produce. But, if we go to the farmers market, all the produce is usually more expensive.

If it is money that you are watching, join a local community garden or grow your own. This is the best way to know where your food is coming from and how it is handled. Local community gardens usually don't cost anything to join, but you will probably need to spend some weekend time helping pull weeds or harvesting the produce, but it is worth it. If you grow your own food, there is such a feeling of satisfaction. It will also get you and those kids outside in nature a lot more.

If this is not your thing, and you still want to watch your money. Make sure to follow these simple guidelines whether you are buying local or organic produce. Always by the best looking produce, free from holes or blemishes. The skin should look nice and feel nice to the touch. It should be firm or medium firm, but not too soft. The produce should usually feel heavy for it's size. It should smell like what it is, not rotten or off smelling.

To eat healthy foods without busting your wallet, stay on the outside perimeter of the grocery store, and avoid the processed stuff like the plague!
