Why it Pays to Have Good Morals

Andrea Burchette
The general consensus in the world today is that it does not pay to have good morals. Who wants to be the only one who stands out in a crowd? Who wants to go against the flow or be labeled as a misfit? Who wants to be the target of cruel jokes or the subject of whispers and stares? Many people have found that it is easier for them to simply fit in with the crowd, and do what they do, no matter how wrong it may be.

It isn't easy to stand out. It can be a lonely feeling to know that you are the only one doing what is right. But it truly is worth it. It is worth every second of awkwardness and every lonely moment.

Those who choose to live a life of good morals enjoy a clean conscience. They don't lose sleep at night because of the murder they committed the day before. They have a clean mind and clear thoughts. They are able to be more productive at home and at work because they don't have weighty sins bearing down on their minds. They are able to love freely, without worrying about hiding their latest love affair. They are able to enjoy a happy life, and more importantly, a free life. They are free, simply because they are not slaves to their imperfect desires, and the desires of this world, but rather, to the good and perfect will of God, or at least to some idea of a Higher Power'.

When you choose a life filled with good morals you are also choosing a more healthy existence. Living by good morals enables you to avoid diseases and cancers that plague many in the world. Many types of cancers develop because of drug and alcohol abuse. Many pregnancies are a result of unprotected sex outside of marriage. Sexually Transmitted Diseases and AIDS are rampant among those engaging in sexual activities outside the bonds of marriage. By maintaining good morals, not only will your conscience be clean, but your body will be also.

Simply knowing that you have within yourself the power to stand up for what you believe to be right and honorable is enough to make having good morals worthwhile. It can be an empowering sensation when you find yourself in a difficult situation, and you are able to make the choice to stand up, unwavering and uncompromising, for your morals and beliefs. No matter how out of place and awkward you may feel, the feeling of accomplishment and pride is undeniable.

Standing up and living as you know you should defines you as a person. It builds strong character, and gives you pride in who you are. It isn't easy to live with good moral sense, but the benefits outweigh the costs every day, making it all worthwhile.
