Why People Get the Birthday Blues

Ways to Deal with It

Jendayi
Birthdays are supposed to be one of the most anticipated days of the year, it's the day a person celebrates life and lets loose, it's a day of jubilant celebration shared with friends and family, or privately, but for some, birthdays are not greeted with the same anticipation and glee, and when friends and families notice this mellow mood towards birthday celebration they approach the person with good intentions but in the wrong way by pushing and pushing and then finally throwing the person a surprise birthday party, in certain situations the birthday person's wish should be respected.

Here are some reasons why a person may not want to go out with a bang for their birthday, and how to deal with them;

Feeling too old; when people hit a certain age whether it be 25, 35, or 40 they want to be discrete about their age. Turning the big one can be embarrassing, and also saddening, as the birthday person recollects about past experiences, and memories, and age is just a reminder of how much time has passed by. The birthday person may not want to acknowledge the new age, they like to remain young.

How to Deal With It;

People who have the birthday blues because they feel too old, really do want a party deep, deep, deep down inside, the best thing to do is throw a party, without all the emphasis on age, limit the huge banners, and signs with the birthday age on it, don't put numerous candles on the birthday cake, instead opt for 1 or three candles, keep it simple, and tell guests not to crack any old jokes, limit conversation on age, and to avoid giving any presents and cards which focus on age.

Shameful, worthless life- Some people may look at their life and feel as though it has been a waste, as if they have not achieved much of anything in their life. Celebrating another birthday is a reminder of failure, of what has not been accomplished in life. It will be painful for people who feel as though they have not achieved much in life to celebrate a birthday. People, may also shy away from celebrating their birthday with a party, because they are afraid of how others will perceive them, and this may be embarrassing because they feel as though they are meaningless in other's eyes.

How to deal with it;

Loved ones should honor his wishes. Instead of throwing a big party maybe loved ones could privately give the birthday person a few words of encouragement, the birthday person should be told how meaningful they are, how important their existence is. Loved ones can individually, (out of the spotlight) give the person a present.

Feelings of Closer to death- Many people may feel as though another year of life is a death sentence. They feel as though their life is run by an hour glass, and the least they want to do is celebrate a year closer to death. These people will also feel saddened as this age is a symbol of the life they will be leaving behind, their head will be full of so much memories, and each year they get older, the more distant those memories become.

How To Deal With It;

Honor their wishes, don't throw a party, instead have a quiet dinner and express to that person your gratitude of them, how much you appreciate them in your life.
