Thinking, in its singularity, implies a multitude of secondary reasons. Most fundamentally, it is the precursor process of obtaining knowledge. It is through knowledge and reasoning that mankind exploits his best trait--the ability to question 'Why' and 'How'. It is what makes us human--what makes us distinct from everything in the world we live amongst, founding the basis for everything that makes humanity what it is.
Focusing more sharply, and perhaps less philosophically and more materialistically, earning a college degree does have its benefits socially. Employers are more apt to hire, and a job is a crucial device to the all-essential dollar. While in terms of humanitarianism this may seem a trifling matter, economically it is all too important.
Keeping with social matters, the college experience can also be an important avenue to personal development. Interacting with varied people under differing settings and circumstances can cultivate extraversion and positive interaction. College is unique in this respect and can offer venues seen nowhere else.
The expansive array of reasons spawned by elaborating on thinking is endless--just a few examples have been explored. Likewise the infinite number of avenues of self-improvement is evident. While the best reasons for going to college are dependent on an open mind, keeping an open book is always a good idea.
Author's Comments:
I am a proponent of education--a firm believer that the quest for knowledge should be a life-long journey. Even so, sometimes I feel college is overrated, but like many things that are overrated, it is not to say you should avoid them. Instead, make the most of the experience, without getting overly caught up in semantics, policy, and bureaucracy. That's my two cents. Don't be afraid to pick up a science book just for fun now and then!
