Why Do People Get Married?

Kantus
Here are 5 possible reasons why I think people get married.

1. Because it is a trend?

Trend might not be the best word to use but this seems to be the best word to describe it. Why did your parents get married? Why did your grandparents get married? This is the same as asking "why do I wear clothes?" or "why do I get haircuts?" or "why do I seem to dress like most other people do?"

The point is we seem to conform to what most other people around us are doing and have been doing in the past.

Why do people get married? Because marriage has been around for a long time and it is normally expected of most adults to get married at some point in life because that is just how things work in the world and that is what the customary trends dictate.

2. For love?

Some people fall in love with another person and decide that this will last forever and get married. Love is a whole another topic but as it relates to the question "why do people get married?" it is easy to see how love and marriage relate to one another. The way most people define love and marriage, they seem to go hand-in-hand. Why do people get married for love? The common thread between the two is that they are meant to last forever and that seems reason enough for some people to get married.

3. For money?

Some people think of marriage as a business transaction in hopes of gaining monetary benefits either immediately or in the future. Why do people get married for money? Money is required to survive in this world. For those that think of it as a business, it is just another way to increase their income. Why or how marriage occurs for money is a whole another topic.

4. Because of kids?

Sometimes pregnancy occurs before marriage. It seems to be common to see people that have children also be married so in fear of being looked down on by society, people get married. Other times, people get married so that they can have kids because they do not believe in having kids without marriage.

5. For a commitment?

For many, marriage is looked at as a commitment. Why can't the two make a promise to themselves to try to stay with each other as long as they can without getting married? Why do people get married to show their commitment? Those that do get married for the commitment, they seem to think marriage shows another level of their love for each other and that it will solidify their relationship.

To me these 5 reasons seem to be the most common for why people get married. Can anyone think of any other good reasons that answers the question: Why do people get married?
