Why Do People Surf?

Bradley McClain
Surfing is the movement of a board through the face of the wave. Surfing is becoming a very popular sport and it seems like once someone starts surfing they never stop. Some famous surfing spots include Hawaii, California, Costa Rica, Southern Africa and more. Surfing is all about the wave and in fact it is all about my wave.

It is a very selfish sport. When someone is surfing they aren't thinking about what wave the person next to them is going to get they only care about what wave they are going to catch next. This is why surfing has become a very competitive sport and has led to some fights or some physical conflicts. Surf localism is common at beaches where people grow up together surfing and don't allow outsiders to surf in what they call "Their Spot".

Why do people surf?

There are many reasons why a person would want to surf and until you actually surf you may not agree with them. The goal of surfing is to get as deep into the barrel of the wave as possible or just get a good long ride. Some people treat a wave as a ramp to do tricks and some simply just ride the waves. The reason why people surf is the feeling or adrenaline rush that comes after riding the face of the wave. You may see people surfing and think it doesn't look that fun, but until you actually ride down the face of a wave and experience the feeling surfers get you will not know.

Surfing is very addictive and that is the reason why it is growing in population and it is also the reason why someone would surf from age 5 to age 70. Surfing is probably the most peaceful activity a person could do. The water provides a natural peace and the waves are beautiful to watch. Being able to experience the energy of the wave is the best part. It is surely a gift from God.

Surfing is dependent on many factors and it is these factors that can make a surfing spot the best sport. The swell direction the intensity of the swell, the wind, high or low tides, or what's underneath the water. Perfectly level sand that is usually next to piers helps shape the wave. There are also some great coral breaks or outer reef breaks especially in Hawaii.
