Why Philadelphia Sports Fans Are so Brutal

Christopher Edelen
Simply put, we never win. I'm from the Philadelphia area, and I have experienced years of Philadelphia sports insanity. I've been to the stadiums and I have experienced Philadelphia's not so fine sportsmanship. Philadelphia is known to have some of the most disrespectful and ruckus fans in the sports world today.

If you're a fan of sports you should know at least a little about Philadelphia's sports history. So I'm not going to do into a ton of the details. I'll make my statements as simple as possible. All of Philadelphia`s teams always seem to play pretty poorly. Sure the Eagles have been playing well, but they won't win the Super Bowl anytime soon. So many times a Philly team will make it deep into the playoffs, and they'll choke. It's a Philadelphia curse, we just can't win. No matter how the team looks going into the final round, we just can't seem to pull it off.

The reason that Philadelphia fans are so brutal with other visiting teams is that they have an intense sense of pride. No one in Philadelphia cares how bad the team plays in the end, most of the time they are just happy to see their team get as far as they did. For me, I don't care how good they play all season if they can't play the same way they do in the regular season in the playoffs. I don't ride the hometown bandwagon as most people do. I don't care if I'm from Philadelphia, I can admit that the Phillies stink, and that the Sixers are among the worst teams in basketball. The Eagles have been consistently playing well for a few seasons now, but the Flyers are playing the worst hockey I've seen in all of my life. Philly fans just love their Philly teams simply because their from Philly.

Take a look at Terrell Owens. Everyone here in Philly loved the news when they heard he was coming to Philly. That year the Eagles made it to the Super Bowl, and Owens was there. Then Owens got traded to the Cowboys and all of the sudden everyone hated Owens. Philly fans don't care how well he played for us, or how good of a season we had when he was here. But because he plays for a different city now, he is the enemy. Philly fans love Philly teams just because they are from Philly. It's that easy to explain. Anyone not on the Philly bandwagon should step out of the way, because Philadelphia fans will bite.
