Why You Should Plant Bulb Flowers

Jennifer Wright
We are now well into spring and on the brink of summer. When spring approaches I start getting ready for gardening season.

However, the sad truth is that I do not garden very well. Luckily my mother has a green thumb and is a great gardener. My mother and I usually have a combined garden in which both our families help out. The garden is fairly large and has a variety of plants, mostly veggies.

While the garden is a huge success, I am more partial to flowers. When the monotonous grey and white of the winter is finally gone, I want my yard to be full of color. This is why bulbs are my favorite kind of flowers.

When you use bulbs, year after year you will see your beautiful flowers come back without having to replant every year.

Most bulbs need to be planted during the right season and I keep missing the right time to do daffodils. When I was growing up our yard had masses of daffodils everywhere, so I have a thing for the daffodil.

Planting for bulbs is different depending on what region of the country you live in. I live in the Northwest and the planting times for bulbs are from October through the beginning of December. Although, earlier is usually better.

I like to put my bulb plants into flower boxes or raised beds because the bulbs do best when they have maximum drainage. A hill or slope is also a great place to plant them.

Here is a good website to use to reference planting bulbs.

My first experience with bulb planting was three years ago when I planted lilies (which are my favorite flower.) Right now, the very same lilies are just coming up. I am so glad I discovered bulbs because bulb plants are, in my opinion, the easiest to grow and maintain.

In all honesty, sometimes I forget to water my flowers and plants. Well ok, I forget to water them a lot. But not watering doesn't affect my lilies, which are bulbs, they still keep coming up every year and the blooms last for a few months before they start to fall off. Not watering does kill all my other flowers and plants though.

Also when I planted the lilies, I planted only ten of them and now there are over twenty. This year I am going to finally plant my daffodils and Iris's. The Iris is another flower which grew abundantly in the yard where I grew up.

So, if you have never tried planting some bulb plants than this is the time when you should start planning for planting. Then next spring you will be excited to see the splashes of color coming up all over your yard.

Bulbs are really pretty easy to grow. I really love gladiolus and tulips.

I love planting flowers. You mentioned all the good ones, too, Iris, Daffodil, Lily. We're trying Gladiolus this year.
