Why is My Poop Green?

Abby Willow
Who knew that if you had a cold or a sinus infection (or even allergies, for that matter), you could end up with green poop? Turns out, if you've been swallowing a lot of mucus lately because your allergies are acting up or you have a head cold or sinus infection, your poop could be green as a result. Learn the other reasons behind your green poop, because after all, isn't poop supposed to be brown?

While poop normally is a brown color, it can often turn a scary looking (and foul-smelling) dark green color. While foods may play a factor (green food can equal green poop), if your poop also has has a nice lovely odor, it could be a bunch of bile (produced by your liver) in your poop that is making it smell sour and look so green. Could be your body is just producing more bile than usual lately, but if you have stomach or digestion issues in addition to your green poop, it could be a sign that your gallbladder (which processes bile) isn't working up to par. Give it a few days and see if the green poop fades- it could be that that greasy Chinese food you've been eating nonstop for the last few days is putting your gallbladder into overload.

Certain antacids and even iron supplements are well-known for making poop a green color. If you eat iron-enriched foods, like spinach, you can end up with that dark green poop again. Watch your urine as well- if a food dye or supplement is going to affect your poop, it's going to change your pee a funny color as well, like how asparagus makes pee green. It's normal for some supplements and medications to turn your poop a different color in the process.

Should you be concerned about having green poop? Well, that depends. Most green poop symptoms fade on their own within a few days, soon as the culprit is gone (finally cleared out that Chinese). But if your green poop is also in conjunction with nausea, vomiting, blood in your stool, runny or hard stool, or you just don't think that your green poop is a normal thing (it is fairly normal to have green poop every now and then) check with your doctor to make sure everything is all right. Odds are, you're just fine, but you can never be too careful.
