Why a Pre-Paid Legal Plan is Better Than Hiring an Attorney

Terry Edwards
As you know, hiring the services of an attorney for any reason can be quite expensive. With rates of $100 - $250 per hour, it's easy to see how this is out of reach for most people's budget. This is where a pre-paid legal plan can be a big benefit. Here are a few benefits of using a legal plan over hiring a traditional lawyer.

1. Expense
As I mentioned, hiring an attorney can be a huge expense, whereas having a legal plan can take the bite out of this cost. For approximately $10 -$30 a month, you can have a pre-paid legal plan that can save you literally thousands of dollars on attorney fees. It allows the average person to have access to a lawyer when they need one without having to take out a second mortgage to pay for it.

2. Simple And Convenient
Trying to understand the various fees that an attorney charges for is difficult at best. You have flat fees, contingency fees, statutory fees, hourly fees, etc. Some of these fees are nearly impossible to figure out how they are calculated.

For example, what is the attorney's contingency fee? Does it include all expenses? How about other fees aside from their hourly rate? Could you be billed for secretarial fees, parking fees, etc.? All of these various types of fees have to be taken into consideration when hiring your own attorney.

This isn't the case when you have a pre-paid legal plan. You have a contract that you pay a set monthly fee on and the legal plan takes care of the rest. There are no surprises. If your legal need isn't covered for some reason, the provider will let you know upfront and give you some options. You may be able to utilize the attorney's services at a reduced rate.

3. Pre-Emptive Law
This is another big benefit of having a pre-paid legal plan. You will have access to phone consultation and advice, as well as having legal documents drawn up and sent out. How does that help you? Consider that most legal problems can be solved without litigation and going to court. Most of the time these legal issues and problems can be solved with a letter from your attorney.

These are three good reasons to have a pre-paid legal plan in place for you and your family. They can certainly save you a lot of time, money, and frustration in the long run.

Wow, this article is so off the mark. Many states are reviewing laws surrounding pre-paid attorney fees and services offered. The attorneys that work with these pre-paid programs are those that cannot get a job with a reputable firm or establish a client base on thier own.
