Why Do I Have to Press "2"???

Did You Really Ever Sit Down and Think What Benefits the US Gives Those of Us Who Are US Citizens?

I don't know about you, but I really am offended when I hear "Press 2 for Spanish" whenever I call anywhere. I mean, I have nothing against the Spanish language, but why is Spanish offered on a phone directory and not any other language? America as everyone knows is a big ole melting pot. So many people from all over the world live here. Back in the 1960's (which is not that long ago) is when my parents came off the boat from Italy. They neither spoke nor read in English. Life would have been a whole lot easier for them if there were newspapers, signs and phone recordings that catered to the Italian language.

Instead, here we are 45 years later and America caters to Spanish speaking folk. Why? Why not make English the dominant language spoken and written in the USA? Why have our children be forced to learn Spanish in school? Other nations who occupy the USA like so many people that come over from India, China, Greece, Italy, France, etc. why is there no "press #3 for Chinese, press #4 for Greek, press #5 for Italian, press #6 for French and so on?

It is never clear to me why the US government does what they do. They open the doors to one nation and put up partition to other nations. There really is no equality. It seems that the president has made it a point to stop illegal immigrants in this country. The Latin countries are who he is most focused on, because its' where most of the illegal communities are coming from. Well, I ask, if there were American signs and only one language accepted in the USA, then the immigrants wouldn't feel so much at home here and it wouldn't be so easy for them to get jobs, get information, etc. Is the presidents immigration plan taking into account how easy we have made it for the Latin community in the "the press #2 for Spanish" to live in the US?

As a daughter of immigrant Italian parents, who by the way became legal citizens, the right way. I know how hard it is to be in a country where you don't understand anyone. So, I feel I do have a right to feel that the Latin community has been given a free pass to live here among us. What makes illegal aliens remain illegal is that, there is really no pressure to become a legal, unless you're caught, and we know that there is a slim chance at that. There is not a place that does not cater to them...do you blame them for slipping under the radar all the time? Of course not, which is my point. It's too easy to live in this country if you are Latin.

So, we will continue to hurry and press #1 for English and hope that we stay #1...and not get the #2 spot... the irony to all this, is that that press #1 for English call will more than likely be answered by an English speaking person in India. No matter how you look at it, our jobs, American jobs, are being given up to people without US citizen documents. So I ask, what is the "value added" in being a US citizen? The only things I can think of that US citizens are good for is...1) the luxury of going to war at the governments will, 2) paying taxes or go to jail for not paying them. 3) enduring billions of dollars in national debt, for monies given and spent in other countries instead of our own...just look at how hurricane Katrina destroyed so many American lives and two years later are still not rebuilt yet.

The list goes on and on and I honestly can't think of one good thing that my US citizens papers serves? Isn't that a shame and a crime onto itself? We are American, but as American's we get the least for the most sacrifices we do.

  • How many times do you dial a number and have to choose to speak English?
  • Why are we catering to just One crowd, why not choose...English only or one european, one latin,..?
US citizens get the least amount of benefits for their citizenship. The US government is flawed in so many ways, and the biggest flaw is punishing us for being citizens.

We are losing a major component of what allows us to be a united nation. The Spanish speakers are an island within our culture -- not assimilating, prey to political animals who see forming a distinct group within the US as a power grab for themselves. I write to manufacturers all the time to inform them that I am passing over their products and buying ones with English only labels even if it means that I spend more money. This is all about money and power and the US be damned in the eyes of those who encourage our balkanization through Spanish.

Why is it acceptable for organizations such as Association House in Chicago, Illinois, to post employment opportunities advertisements for bilingual only?
