It isn't because I don't give them a bath all the time, they get a bath once a week but no matter how hard I scrub them they still smell.
The main reason for this is usually their anal glands. The anal glands build up with nasty toxins and fluids and usually become drained when they have a bowel movement. This isn't always the case and they get backed up and slowly excrete themselves or even may excrete when the dog gets excited, or gets scared, you will suddenly notice a strong fish odor, no need to be alarmed it is just your pug's butt. A warm washcloth with some lavender oil can help ease the odor and the discomfort for your pug. The bad smell takes a while to subside so please bear with your canine friend during this time. It isn't their fault and they have no control over it.
A quick visit to the Vet can help with this problem. The Vet can safely drain the pugs anal glands to provide relief. This is a stinky job and I don't recommend trying this at home.
Pugs are naturally attracted to the stinky stuff no matter what, they love garbage and getting into dirty laundry. If there's something smelly they will find it roll in it or eat it and then make themselves smelly and stinky.
A pug has several rolls and folds on their little faces. These crevices in between tend to fill up with food, dirt and gunk. This can be another cause for why your pug may smell bad. it's a good idea to get a warm washcloth or baby wipe to clean up in between their folds. After a while the build up can cause an unbearable odor and this can be very unpleasant for you and your pug.
Make sure their nails are kept clipped and clean. Dirt, feces and bacteria can live in and near their nail beds producing a breeding ground for bad stench. Be sure to keep these areas very dry and dirt free to promote not only cleanliness but over all good canine health.
Furthermore just general bathing at least once a week can keep your pug stay healthy and smelling nice. If you own a pug you know they like to cuddle with us just as much as I we like to cuddle with them. So keeping their hygiene top notch is a plus for everyone involved.
Despite their stinkiest habits, remember you are not loved until you are loved by a pug.

Post a CommentI am not sure what you guys are talking about, unless you are referring to the anal gland smell.
My Pug has a bath once a week, sometimes after 1 1/2 weeks but the only smell is like what another owner described as "corn chips". It is not that noticeable either. When I notice that smell than I give her a bath.
The only other scent that she has that IS terrible, comes from the anal glads. BUT that is not something that she has all the time. I make sure the groomer or vet cleans the anal glands every time she is groomed or anytime I start to see her "scooting".
When we first got her we didn't know about the anal glands so they would fill up and when she got excited it would leak out. Now THAT is the most HORRIBLE smelling stuff.
If you wash the dog once a week and make sure the anal glands get cleaned with every grooming, than you will have no bad smells from your Pug. I would think this is the same for ANY dog.
I have 2 pugs, one male and one female. Daisy(female) tends to smell like corn tortilla's by the end of the week, but weekly baths work great. Roko(male) has a funk that is hard to describe. So he get 2 baths a week and a daily wipe down with warm washcloths. Also after each bath we use Coconut scented doggy cologne(available at petco/petsmart). LOL there's just some smells you can't get out.
i went to wal-mart and in the sporting goods they have scent away hunters use it the label says its all natural i used scent away and it WORKS.
We adopted a pug a few weeks ago, the smell is so much stronger than normal doggy odor. She is an indoor dog, we bath her weekly, she is wiped down with a cloth daily. It makes no difference, she still smells and It is oh so frustrating. We want to enjoy her company but everything, everyone she sits on is left with an unwanted dog cologne. So if you get a pug be prepared for the smell, because you can't just put them outside like other dogs due to overheating etc plus they want to be your shadow. Clean freaks should probably avoid this breed..
We had two pugs growing up and they are nothing but adorable! I love pugs! One of our pugs did have a severe skin rash and we had to put here down...I cried like a baby, but it was probably for the best. Pugs are the cutest, and most adorable pet on the plantet :)!!!!
we own 2 pugs.yes they shed but it can be controlled with the furminator. they are very smart and loveable. you either think they are beautiful (we thinkk so) beauty is in the eye of the beholder

I agree, pugs are totally dumb and ugly.
I love dogs, but I don't know why anyone would ever want a pug-they are gross, make noises, ugly, and shed an insane amount.
I've got one pug, normally pugs is so smell, especially saliva is so pungent. As one of company pharmacist, i used to try this herb for nourishing myself but some side effect is so excited, all body smell gone and feel energize all day and prolong my working hours very well. When trying this remedy with my dog, i wonder that all bad odour gone with in 3 days and last for 2 weeks until today.I think this remedy can help your dog too.
