Why You're Not Making a Living Writing for AC

10 Reasons Why People Fail at Writing for AC

Amy Brantley
When I wrote the article, "Make a Living Writing for Associated Content" I got a lot of great comments from people who were inspired to work harder for AC, but I unfortunately got other reactions as well. There were people who went on to write articles claiming that I was wrong, that it was impossible to make a living writing for AC. This article explains why some people aren't making a living writing for AC.

Why You're Not Making a Living Writing for AC #1: You Lack Determination

This is the biggest reason why some people aren't making a living writing for AC. Too many people lack the determination it requires to make AC their full-time job. They aren't able to sit down and make themselves work without having a supervisor instructing them every step of the way. Put simply, you must have determination if you want to make a living writing for AC.

Why You're Not Making a Living Writing for AC #2: You Don't Proof Read Your Articles

In order to get good offers from AC, you must give them good content. If you write an article and don't go back and proof read your content, before submitting it, it will contain errors. AC wants articles that are free of grammar and spelling errors. They may look over the occasional error, but if your article is filled with errors you will never make a living writing for AC.

Why You're Not Making a Living Writing for AC #3: You Don't Use Keywords Correctly

Once I learned to properly use keywords, my offers increased by 20%. You must know how to properly use keywords if you ever hope to make a living writing for AC. To properly use keywords, you must choose a popular keyword and then you must use a keyword analysis tool to make sure you have the proper amount of keywords, which is 2-5%. Check the resources section for a great article on keywords.

Why You're Not Making a Living Writing for AC #4: You Choose Poor Topics

Flat out, topics of little interest will not get offers. You must be able to choose topics that will be searched for. For example, choose topics that involve upcoming holidays. You should also look at search engines and see what the popular searches are at that time.

Why You're Not Making a Living Writing for AC #5: You Don't Treat It Like a Real Job

If I can make a living writing for AC, anyone can. I got some comments saying that I could only do this because I was college student. Many people have the misconception that being a college student means that I have very few bills, which couldn't be any farther from the truth. I must pay rent, a car payment, insurance, a dish bill, phone, cell phone, internet, electricity, credit cards, and many more bills. But still, I'm able to make a living writing for AC and I'm also able to work full-time while going to college full-time. I'm able to do this because I treat AC like a real job.

Why You're Not Making a Living Writing for AC #6: You Don't Promote Your Content

If you don't bring people to your articles, AC will not want to give you good offers in the future. You must prove to them that people will read your content. If you can't prove this, you're wasting AC's time.

Why You're Not Making a Living Writing for AC #7: You Have Poor Writing Skills

Content managers will be more than happy to tell you that your writing is poor. They will not pay you for articles that have grammatical errors or are simply not worth reading. You must fully explore your topic and give people enough information to keep them interested.

Why You're Not Making a Living Writing for AC #8: You Don't Devote Enough Time

A real job will take 40 hours of your time and so will AC, if you want to make a living from it that is. If I can devote 40 hours a week and still go to school full-time, so can you. You just have to schedule the time that you want to work for AC and have the determination to stick to that schedule.

Why You're Not Making a Living Writing for AC #9: You Let Life Get in the Way

Many people who try to work from home let life get in the way. When you work outside the home, you may think about the things that need to be done when you get home, but you finish your job and then tackle those things when you get off work. Some freelance writers are not able to stay at the computer and get their work done. They get up and clean or make dinner or come up with some other excuse to leave their work. You can't do this at a regular job and you can't do it if you expect to make a living writing for AC.

Why You're Not Making a Living Writing for AC #10: It Isn't Meant to Be

Some of you are right; you never will make a living writing for AC because you can't fix the problems I have listed above. Some of you will never have the determination it takes to make a living writing for AC and that's fine. AC is just like any other job; it isn't for everyone. Give it time and determination and if it still doesn't work, give up and move on, because it isn't meant to be.

Excellent article! I have recently quit my job, and am determined to make a living by writing. Life is too short to be miserable, and I will do whatever it takes to make this happen. I truly appreciate the way you shed light on what are some of my problem areas!

Great article, to the point, direct, as needed when we have excuses that this doesn't work or whatever - we need to be determined as with whatever our goals are and do it consistently.

I love this. I am writing for AC and it IS my full time job (among MANY other things). You are right, Amy. ALL of these things (consistency is key) will guarantee that you can succeed at AC. Thank you for a great reiteration of why I love my J.O.B. and how blessed I am to be able to do what I love!!

Great article, very concise and makes some good points about "working" for AC. It's true, it should be treated as a job (if that is indeed the writer's intention).

  • Dita Basu 10/22/2010

Thanks for this article. Good points.

  • Abby Willow 10/15/2010

All your points are extremely valid. I make AC work from home but I also work 8 or more hours a day, just like any ol job. Sometimes I wish I had my regular 9-5 back because it appears easier, but AC pays if you work hard, for sure. It does for me anyhow. :)
