Why Real Friends Are Better Than Imaginary Ones

A Few Ideas and Suggestions for Parents

Mrs. Renee
Do you remember having imaginary friends when you were a kid? Many people do, however doctors are now suggesting that it is better for your children to have real friends instead of imaginary ones. Some people feel that it is a good thing to have an imaginary friend so that your child can learn to broaden his imagination. Of course this article is in no way insinuating that your child has some type of problems or disorders if they have an imaginary friend. Some doctors just feel that real friends will give them the opportunity to expand their imagination and develop some very necessary social skills.

Some children even continue to have imaginary friends once they begin school. This can defiantly cause a lot of problems. Some children may tease them because of it, and they may shy away from interacting with the other children because of their imaginary friend. So what do doctors recommend? Some feel that it would be best for you not to encourage your child to have imaginary friends. Instead introduce them to other children their own age, and try to plan some additional outings for them on the weekend. If they have other children to play with, this may get rid of their need for an imaginary friend. Even if you feel that there is nothing wrong with your child having an imaginary friend you should definitely make it a point for them to get rid of them before they start school. You will definitely be doing your child a big favor. Usually what happens during the first few years of school stick with a child for life? The one thing that you don't want is for your child to have a bad experience because of their imaginary friend. Slightly before your child starts school you can simply let them know that it is time for their imaginary friend to leave so that they can make new ones at school. Of course if you think about it, you may find that it is easier to just to try and encourage your child not to have any imaginary friends. Since there are tow conflicting reports on this topic, why not post your own thoughts or comments at the bottom of this article. Did you grow up with an imaginary friend? Does your child have an imaginary friend? Has it affected their life in a negative way or a positive way? I am sure that plenty of people would love to hear your opinions or viewpoint on this topic.
