1. To feel a sense of belonging
Researching your ancestry can give you a sense of belonging. Knowing about your relatives can make you feel closer to them. We all want to feel like we belong somewhere.
2. To learn about your ethnicity
Are you German, Scottish, Asian, or a little bit of everything? It can be fun to learn about your ethnicity.
3. To find out more about your surname
When you research your lineage you may find that your surname has changed over the years. This was the case with my last name. It was quite a surprise to me.
4. To discover what your family crest looks like
You may enjoy seeing what your family crest looks like. It is fun to learn why that crest is associated with your last name.
5. To see if you are related to royalty
How many famous ancestors do you have? Are you related to Cleopatra or George Washington? Perhaps you are a distant cousin to Brad Pitt!
6. In order to find relatives you never knew about
You may discover you have a long lost cousin or great aunt. This can bring families closer.
7. To learn the history of how your ancestors immigrated to this country
How and when did your ancestors come to America? Was it a smooth trip or did some of your ancestors die on the way here?
8. To learn about the culture of your ancestors
You may decide you want to learn about the food or dance in the country that your ancestors came from. You might want to find out what religion they practiced.
9. In order to have a hobby and pass the time
Researching your ancestry takes a lot of time. I can be a fun and engaging hobby!
10. To share your history with your children
Whether you have children now or plan to in the future your ancestry can be a great thing to share with your children.
Whatever your reasons for researching your family tree, make sure you have fun. Finding out about your ancestors can be an enjoyable and enriching experience. It takes time but with the resources available online it makes it a lot easier. You can do it from home at your convenience. So, enjoy yourself while you find out about your history.
