Rudy Giuliani is best known for his reaction to the September 11 attacks of six years ago. He showed leadership, compassion and a levelheadedness that won America's admiration and the sobriquet "America's Mayor". Almost immediately following those dark days, Rudy has been mentioned as a potential candidate for the Presidency.
There is much to recommend Giuliani for America's highest office. His aforementioned leadership following 9/11 showed that he has the ability to react to dark situations and rally his people to respond constructively. Even before that though, he had shown an ability to clean up America's largest city, get its financial house in order and work with political opponents to get things done. All in all, Giuliani could very well make a very successful President.
There is one tiny bump in Rudy Giuliani's march to the White House. He will never in a million years get the Republican nomination. Democrats are more likely to nominate Zell Miller than Republicans are to nominate Giuliani. Not only is Rudy Giuliani pro-gay rights, he is for gun control and perhaps most damning of all in today's Republican party, he is pro-choice on abortion. The idea that Republican party would nominate a pro-choice candidate, from New York of all places, is beyond absurd. It is laughable. Inside of two weeks after Giuliani's announcement of his candidacy at least one of his opponents will have painted him as a gay loving baby killer and he will not make it out of New Hampshire.
I however have a solution for Mr. Giuliani. Become a Democrat. The Democrats would just about fall over themselves in their rush to acclaim Rudy Giuliani as their man for 2008. They know that in the general Giuliani would attract moderates by the busload and besides, a New York Republican is just a Democrat by another name. Pair Giuliani with Barack Obama, John Edwards or even Hillary and the Republicans would be hard pressed to find a ticket that could survive their primary campaign and appeal to the great middle of the American electorate.
It really is a brilliant plan, too bad politicians aren't as clear-eyed and logical as penniless internet columnists.
