Why Sam Bradford is Not Ready for the NFL Draft

Nick Meyer
When Sam Bradford won the Heisman Trophy, I believed wholeheartedly that it was a big mistake.

That's not to say that Bradford isn't a great kid or a great college player because he is both of those things, but he simply lacks the oomph and the "outstanding" qualities that make a Heisman winner compared to the other candidates.

The Heisman Trophy is supposed to go to the Most Outstanding Player and Bradford never jumped out on film to me. He never really made any spectacular plays that I saw in his highlights like Tim Tebow even Colt McCoy did.

Bradford the number one overall pick?

If the Detroit Lions were to take Bradford, they would be making a huge mistake. First of all, he doesn't pass the eye test of a great NFL QB. He has a smallish, underdeveloped build and his arm strength is solid but not great by any means.

One caller to a radio show on WDFN in Detroit mentioned how Bradford seems to float the ball a lot and I concur. He doesn't and hasn't had to fit the ball into tight windows which are commonplace in the NFL. His passes run the risk of being picked off left and right if he doesn't learn to put more zip on the ball.

That is just one of the many unknowns with Bradford. He also hasn't taken a ton of snaps under center and he still has an awkward-looking delivery. He's only played two years in college and hasn't faced many good defenses in the Big 12 Conference, either.

Sam Bradford Draft Projection

If Bradford were to come out for the 2008 NFL Draft, I don't think he would be picked until the late first or early second round once scouts realize the weaknesses he has in his game.

Bradford will most likely opt to stay in school and make another run at a Heisman Trophy or BCS Title Game appearance again for the Oklahoma Sooners and that would definitely be the best choice for him regarding the NFL Draft.

Bradford needs to come back to OU and get much stronger while perhaps working on his mechanics in order to become a legitimate first round NFL quarterback for the 2010 NFL Draft.
