Why is Sanjaya Still on American Idol?
So why is 17 year old Sanjaya Malakar still singing his less then perfect tune on the show?
"I think people have seen my voice but not necessarily the potential it could be," Sanjaya says at the Top 12 party. "I think I have a certain charm."
Several people have said that maybe it's his Charm, or his Hair, or even pity for the crazy haired singer. Some have even gone as far as saying that it could be an "anti-idol" plot.
There are so many possibilities why the far less then perfect Sanjaya is still in the running. But what is the true reason he has survived so far?
"Um, is it the hair?" host Ryan Seacrest jokes.
"American Idol" stylist Dean Banowetz was asked this very question.
"He's 17. I think he's got a lot of gumption for just doing what he wants to do," Dean stated. "He wants the Farrah flip. And then he also wants the straight sleek, sexy hair. And then he did say he wanted his hair curled."
Whatever hair style he chooses to model, it ends up being brought up by the judges. He has yet to fail getting lots of commends on his hair.
"Hair 'Idol!' You got it jumping off!" Randy Jackson shouts.
"I have many, many women calling me wanting Sanjaya's curls," Dean added.
Whatever style he chooses the girls go wild for Sanjaya. There are American Idol fan sites all over the internet with girls asking each other "Do you daydream about Sanjaya?"
Brandon Rogers who was booted off the show has a better voice then Sanjaya, so why is he still on the show?
"How in the world did you get booted and Sanjaya's still there?" Billy Bush asked Brandon when he visited the stage.
"The nature of the competition is America is going to vote for who they want to vote for," Brandon said.
On VoteForTheWorst.com, they ask the millions of visitors to vote for the contestant who should lose. This attempt to throw the show off balance bothers American Idols producers and judges.
"We're often times the thing that puts somebody over the edge to stay," VoteForTheWorst founder Patrick Wells says.
"I've joined and I am definitely voting for the worst tonight," Howard Stern revealed.
"Any time you can get somebody who has a big following talking about you, it makes a big difference," Wells added.

I'm 39, married, white and both my husband and I (so much for your demographics) think he has a sweet, pure voice that is more appealing than anyone else on the show. Some are stronger but not more listenable. His ability to rise above criticism without turning ugly--he's even shown a sense of humor about the rude remarks--has won our respect. He even manages to still look like he's having fun out there--more than some of his compatriots who've gotten a lot less negativity thrown their way. He has an understanding beyond his years that pop success requires the ability to make the most of ALL of what you've got in order to command attention and entertain. And that you have to keep things fresh to remain successful (Madonna, J. Lo, Gwen Stefani anyone?). Please let this P.O.S. ignorant talentless Boy lover get voted off the show. Changing the words of no Doubt's song to say " My type of Gal" ain't fooling anybody pal. It's obvious, we all get it. You got all of San Francisco voting for you, all the Gas station owners and now the little 12 year old retarded girls like the one planted in the audience. Just because you want to win does not mean you have the right and certainly do not have the talent.

I don't agree with your view on Sanjaya at all. He is choosing to go on American Idol, so he most likely doesn't view it as torture like people refer to keeping him there as. And yes, maybe "Vote for the Worst" gives him a decent amount of votes, but he also has a pretty stable fan base to vote for him as well, and I am speaking of actual FANS. Not pity voters, or "Vote for the Worst" type people. He does have talent, there is no way for people to avoid that because he did make it past the auditions. And he made it to the top 24 because he did well. He did great in "Waiting on the World to Change" as well. I do admit he could have done much better when he sang "Ain't no Mountain High Enough", he should have sang louder. But he did a decent performance (listen to the mp3 on AmericanIdol.com if you want to hear what he sounded like without all the microphone distortion).
