If you've been hiding under a rock for the couple of years, the technology's called podcasting. At first, only internet-exclusive shows were offering free downloads of theirs shows, but now many radio networks are offering podcasts of their shows. It's not just a couple of guys broadcasting out of their apartment. Some of the larger mainstream radio shows are now being offered as podcasts for free. Lifestyle Talk Radio which hosts a number of business shows, including the Bruce Williams Show, is offering their line-up for free. Other major shows, such as Rush Limbaugh and Clark Howard are offering their shows as podcasts. Not every single radio show has a podcast yet, but good shares of them do.
It's very easy to setup downloading your favorite radio shows to your iPod or other mp3 player. All you'll need is an application called a podcast receiver, or you can use the one built right into iTunes. Visit the website of the radio show you're interested, and chances are they'll have a link to their podcasts. Whenever a new show comes out, it'll automatically be downloaded to your iPod or MP3 player.
You can then take your mp3 player loaded full of your favorite radio shows and songs, and use them in your car. If your car doesn't have a line in jack (most of them don't), you can purchase a simple adapter which will allow you to play them through your car's cassette adapter, or over the air on the radio.
It's as simple as that. All of your favorite radio shows and songs are available on demand, when you want them, for free, and often without commercials. It doesn't get much better than that. It's going to take a little bit of work to setup, but the added convenience and money saved is well worth it.
