Why Scarlett Johansson is the Most Overrated Actress in the World

It's All About Looks

Jeff D Gorman
I'm sure Scarlett Johansson is a nice person. If you knew me, you'd know that I'm a nice person who never says mean things about others. It's just that Scarlett Johansson is not a very good actress at all, and she just gets by on her looks.

After all these years, Hollywood producers still trip over themselves to get a beautiful blonde into their movies, regardless of talent. That's why Johansson has enjoyed such a successful career, and that's why she has six more movies in production.

She simply lacks range and depth. Every time I see her in a movie, it looks like she's playing the same character - the girl every man wants.

Lost in Translation was her breakout film in 2003. She played Charlotte, a lonely young bride whose husband was working in Japan, leaving her stuck in a hotel with nothing to do. Although she spends most of the movie wandering in a haze, never getting angry or excited, she attracts the attention of an aging movie star played by Bill Murray.

The older man and younger woman share a mostly platonic relationship, but ultimately, Murray just cannot stop thinking about the beautiful blonde that has come into his life.

Johansson also appeared in the 2004 film In Good Company. She plays Alex Foreman, who is dating a guy named Carter (Topher Grace). Carter becomes the boss of Alex's father, Dan (Dennis Quaid). You could plug in any young actress into Johannson's spot and get an equal or better performance

As Johansson's fame grew, she attracted the attention of Woody Allen - and what young starlet doesn't? Allen cast her in Match Point (2005), a drama about a tennis pro who falls into a risky affair with Nola (Johansson). Scarlett turns up the intensity only slightly to make the transition from passive object of lust to aggressive femme fatale.

Allen was so taken with Johansson's beauty - not her talent, I suspect - that he cast her opposite Hugh Jackman in Scoop (2006). Johansson plays a young journalism student investigating an international crime. Of course, she falls in love with the aristocrat played by Jackman.

So when you look at Johansson's career, the role that sums it up is her title role in Girl with a Pearl Earring (2003). She barely says a word, only gains attention through her beauty and is ultimately immortalized in a portrait.

Johansson isn't the only actress who coasts on her looks, but she's the most egregious example since Julia Ormond in the '90s. Ormond played the girl that all three brothers wanted in Legends of the Fall (1994), and the girl Harrison Ford wanted in Sabrina (1995). When Ormond actually had to carry a movie in Smilla's Sense of Snow (1997), she gave the audience a sense of sleep.

I'm sure there will be a lot of Johansson fans that will disagree with me. Maybe they see something I don't. I contend that at least 80 percent of Johansson's success is simply through her looks.

She is definately overrated. I believe that I realised that while I watched her performance in the island. Spoilers. She is the clone of a supermodel and a man-Ewan Mc Gregor's prototype-comments on her beauty. She is blond, blue eyes, she has a healthy body but she is not a beauty. There are hundreds of girls out there with more skill and definately more beautiful than her.
Natalie Portman,, who is also overrated in my opinion, is still better than Johansson . So is Thora Birch, her co star in Ghost World. Anne Hathaway, Marion Cotillard are more talented and beautiful than her.
The article was right about Johansson but there was no mention of her weight. Johansson is not skinny, a size 0 actress. Also she is nothing like poor Lindsey Lohan, despite her young age, her A list status, her wealth, Johansson never behaved improperly.
Those two are reasons enough for the studios to promote her as a sex symbol.

Finally! I never got her. I never understood her appeal at all. She's awful.

I agree that if you have Eurocentric features, charisma, the "right" people surrounding you and you know how to get the public's attention, you can definitely be a star.

It's a shame that looks triumph talent. I give her 10 years before she fizzles out.

Very well said. However, Scarlett is not beautiful in a true sense of this word. She has interesting odd features as far as her face goes that get accentuated when she uses bright make up. Same features do not stand out without make up. She has somewhat awkward body shape; it is stocky with short waste and heavy top. Ultimately what makes her attractive is her youth but I do not believe her attractiveness will have long shelf life. She will have a propensity to look very top heavy and somewhat appleshape later in life unless she will work out.

She's okay I guess. Nothing to write home about though. Good article!

No doubt her looks help. But I thought she had talent ever since I saw her in Manny & Lo. And she was only like 11 there, definitely not about looks then. I thought she showed depth in Love Song for Bobby Long and thought she displayed a nice range in Match Point too. I think she has talent, but think you are right too - lately a lot seems to be about her looks.
