Games
Although Sega is still nowhere near where they used to be as a console manufacture when it comes to developing video games, they are doing much better recently. Internally developed games like Valkyria Chronicles and the Yakuza series are critically acclaimed and well-respected. Furthermore, they are building strong relations with external developers like Platinum Games (Bayonetta) and Tri-Ace (Resonance of Fate).
So, for the first time since the Sega Dreamcast was discontinued, Sega has shown consistency at delivering one high quality title after another. As one of the best publisher on the market, Sega has more than enough first- and second-party support to build a solid exclusive library for the Sega Dreamcast 2. Not to mention that Sega will be able to build a better relationships with third-party companies now that they have experience as one.
Expanding Market
The Sega Dreamcast's launch timing was somewhat questionable. The system was released in-between the original Playstation and Playstation 2. In the end, it couldn't stand against the competition, including the Nintendo Gamecube and Xbox.
The Sega Dreamcast 2 will fare much better. This is because the market has expanded exponentially over the past few years thanks to mass-appealing video game systems like the Playstation 2, Nintendo DS and Nintendo Wii. Thus, even a system that might not be doing as well as the competition could strive on the market. For example, even though the Playstation 3 is in last place, it has a decent chance at selling 50 million units, which is more than enough to be sustainable. If the Sega Dreamcast 2 were released today, it will easily outsell the original by multiple folds.
Partnerships
Finally, Sega don't have to go at it alone with the Sega Dreamcast 2. If they chose, they could easily form a partnership with Nintendo, Sony or Microsoft with when building a new system. Furthermore, Sega could also team up with Apple, who may be rumored to be getting in on the gaming industry. Sega left the console manufacturing side of video games because it was a big financial burden. Perhaps partnering with another company could convince them to head right back into the mix with the Sega Dreamcast 2.

Sega will never return to the Console wars. Just be happy they survived the downfall of the Dreamcast and still release good games.
IMO, i reckon Sega should start off small, and release a handheld gaming device, and bring back old IP's such as sonic, and new IP games, along with third party games, and first party in-house developed games. Also, do everythign the psp cant do, or do what the psp can do, but better. They should really do something impressive. If it fails, then Sega should just stay back, but If the handheld is successful, then they can come out with a fully fledged home console maybe during the Nex Gen Wars.
Sega has already partnered with Microsoft when they made the Dreamcast. It was a good console, I played lots of it with my friends. I actually want one but something tells me it's not gonna last.
One of the major reason why Dreamcast flopped is 'coz of the GD-rom, they created a new media that is used for DC only, they should've used a much better media like the DVD, I'm sure if they did, they'll be giving the PS2 a tough competition seeing how easy it was to program for the DC and Sega being a much well known game and console manufacturer.
Maybe one day SEGA will bring out another console, not to forget Shenmue 3. Hate to say it but SEGA has knocked out some much crap over the last 10 years or so, it's a wonder they're still about. Some of their games have been OK, but most have been quick arcade games like Crazy Taxi and The House of the Dead. And the last good Sonic game was Sonic Adventure on the Dreamcast. SEGA needs to change its ways, but I think it's too late now. You look at say the top 50 franchises out there, hardly any of them are by SEGA. They're just been left behing by the likes of EA, Activision, Nintendo, Sony, Codemasters to name a few. Shame but it's the truth.
Partner with apple, they can handle the money while sega handles the actual console
and in terms of power whats to stop them partnering with nVdida or ibm to release a powerful console
3??? is that over saturation of a market
when you consider the mp3 market with almost every elecrronics company releasing some type mp3 (even though none of them will compete with apple) therre is lots of room to compete with apple it it is done well
they have their own mascot
they know how to make a good game
and they knew how to make a good console
why not now
im not saying this as a fanboy as i have never owwned a sega console (lol i dont even have a sega game)
im just saying
Why Not?
Sadly, this article comes off as very naive. There is no statistical analysis, no mention of Sega's current financial situation, no discussion of the hundreds of millions of dollars in R&D, marketing, etc costs. You fail to even consider how horrible over-saturation is for any market. What of digital distribution? What of the ever-growing sentiment of publishers that we need less consoles (or even a single universal platform) rather than more? It's rather fanboy-ish to state that "OMG I'm so sure Sega would do the bestest this time around!1!1!1!1" without giving a more rational analysis of how this statement could possibly be true in this day and age.
We dont need another console. Sega no longer has the resources to make a console that is able to compete with the power houses known as 360 and PS3
Horrible idea, Sega should first release a excellent sonic game then talk about coming back to the console market
good article, seems like sega just faded away, its too bad the dreamcast 2 didn't hold up better than it did. perhaps coming up with a completely new system would greatly benefit them.
