Why You Shouldn't Use Black Candles

I love the dramatic effect of black candles but magically you shouldn't have to use them too often. Black candles are used to draw something away from you, to absorb negative energy and to consume or take away something. Having them near you at all results in your energy being absorbed.

Candle magic is a low form of magic. Its not less effective its just a lower, simpler form from what is considered to be High Magick. An example of high magic would be the Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram. There are many different colors used in candle magic. The most common being the colors of the chakras which are red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. All of these colors work to bring something to you like love, creativity, romance, health, protection, concentration or mental clarity. Black candles work just the opposite. They take energy away from you and can be greatly misused.

Black candles should be kept wrapped up or placed away from your other candles. I know they look pretty as a decoration but leaving them out can actually result in your energy being absorbed when you're unaware of it. They can consume your positive energy, taking it away from you. Always remember, the purpose of the black candle is to absorb. Keep this in mind the next time you want to place some pretty black candles on your altar or around you while working magic for different purposes.

Here is a short list of times when you SHOULD use black candles during spells or rituals:

1. To banish negativity coming from another person or entity

2. To absorb negative energy created from within you such has a bad habit

3. To absorb negative feelings like sorrow or grief

When used correctly black candles are extremely effective. While working magick you don't have to worry about the candle drawing energy you want to keep or that you need away from you. This is because your thoughts are focused and concentrated on your intent. You are controlling what energy you are sending to the candle and you are also controlling what happens to the energy once its put into the candle. Under these conditions, black candles are very powerful.

Some people choose to meditate with black candles but in my opinion that is a big mistake. I would much rather use all the different colors that will enhance my experience rather than taking my energy while I'm meditating. It is also widely said that black candles are protective. This is true in some cases but a black candle won't protect you from evil spirits unless they are sending negative energy your way and you want to banish it.
