Why You Shouldn't Buy Into Old Wives Tales, Myths and Superstitions About Conceiving

Robert Dunham
Beans, toilet seats, and oral; one gets gas, one doesn't get there, and the last only gets you halfway. If you need to get pregnant, have sex, increase the odds, and find a good doctor to help.

It takes two to tango for a reason. The man has to provide the sperm and the woman the eggs. The goal for sperm is to fertilize eggs. When conceiving, most don't understand that men need a lot of sperm to get their "job" done (roughly 100 million sperm, which many men could have a fifth of (3). Why so many? Most sperm gets killed after ejaculation. Conveniently, men and women can up their odds, simply by method and timing.

To start, any kind of vaginal sex can get you pregnant, but "missionary" (man on top, woman bottom) is the most "convenient". "Missionary" is also recommended because it's direct for sperm. Fun things to add on include raising your partner's hips, and orgasms. This uses the natural functions of the vagina to guide sperm downwards. This helps more if you know "ovulation" cycles as well.

"Ovulation" (or egg dropping) is usually two weeks before a female period begins. You can see this as a window of opportunity for getting pregnant (about 1-2 days roughly) (2). Females have varying ovulation cycles, and tests can be bought at most stores to identify when they happen, but they are not "accurate" per say.

Finally, when all options are expended, there are more "direct" methods, like artificial insemination and in vitro fertilization. Both methods employ a method to get directly to the uterus, via a sperm or fertilized egg, bypassing the vagina route (1). These are expensive procedures, but by this point, you should be able to consult a doctor for your own needs.

Good luck.

  • Why sperm count matters.
  • Why does ovulation make a difference.
  • If you cant get it the old fashion way, try a direct method.
Sperm is killed immediately from the Urethra, outside conditions, and on the way through the Vagina. Despite that, sperm can still remain in the vagina for upwards of 14 days.
