Shower Curtain or Shower Door - Do You Have Kids or Pets?
Being flexible, a shower curtain is easier if you're bathing children or dogs in the tub. When the curtain is pushed to the side, the bathtub is more accessible, whereas a rigid shower door may be in the way. Even if you have a door with three panels, that's still one-third of the tub space that you won't have access to reach into while tending a wet and wiggly pet or child.
Shower Curtain is Easier to Clean
Shower doors require more attention to keep clean, be it squeegee after each bath or noxious spray cleaners. A shower curtain can be rinsed clear of soap while you're still in the shower and tossed into the washer occasionally to keep it fresh and mold-free. If you're using a shower curtain liner, your curtain may never need cleaning at all.
Shower Doors Are Boring
Most bathrooms aren't large enough to accommodate much more than the essentials, so they need to do double-duty as accessories. A shower door doesn't give you many decorating options unless you're going for the minimalist look, but a shower curtain can add a splash of color. With a curtain, a necessary item can now be a focal point in your décor.
Is a Shower Curtain or Shower Door Cheaper?
A shower door is more costly to purchase and install, but will likely last years before needing to be replaced. Shower curtains will wear out quicker, but provide a way to get an updated look very inexpensively.
Shower Curtain Is More Private
If your home has more occupants than bathrooms, it's inevitable that occasionally someone will need to use the facilities while another is showering. With the privacy of a shower curtain, the kids can come in to use the bathroom without disturbing mom or dad.
Shower Curtain = No Maintenance
Anyone can put up a shower curtain, but a shower door that's not installed properly can cause myriad problems - tracks that don't slide smoothly, water leaking through gaps, etc. Even if you like to DIY, have a professional handle the shower door or opt for a curtain instead.

Post a CommentHigher end shower curtain liners are machine washable (just don't stick them in the dryer). I think mine was about $8. The other kind are only a couple of bucks each!
I also get light sensitive migraines. Showers help me feel better, but I don't want to shower in the dark. Having a blue curtain and liner filters the light so it doesn't aggravate me when I'm already sick.
Just found this article, very good! Also, don't forget, the doors can shatter from an errant bump, or a slip and fall. A friend of mine was once sliced up awful by a shattered door. Should you get a door, make sure it's safety glass!
great points and agree with them all, much rather have a curtain than a door
great points here! I always thought the door would be better but I am going to stick with the curtain now!
I do like shower doors, and I much prefer a shower to a bath. If I had a choice I would just have a shower cubicle. However, shower doors do require some maintenance, and it's easy to take a shower curtain down for a clean, or to just throw it and buy another, they are cheap after all. I like the new curved tracks that give you the feeling of far more space in the bath with a curtain.
for a DIY project..the curtain wins hands down..and why I have one ;-)
I completely agree. I've had both, and I prefer shower curtains for all of the reasons you've stated here. Most of all, I hate cleaning shower doors.
We have curtains as well, but I never gave it so much thought! Great points. : )
Interesting points.
I prefer curtains for a couple reasons, but do like the looks of doors. I used to clean the doors with shampoo on a brush - takes soap scum off quick - but I hated the tracks on the rim of the tub!
